I've developed a tendency to begin posts here, complaining about my continued status as a jilted lover in the heartless world of academia, but am luckily learning not to post them. In the meantime, though, anyone ever hear of Minnesota State University, Mankato? It's a job in my field, which is, of course, exciting (and rare. Oh, how I wish I'd ( Read more... )

You shouldn't be snobby about Mankato! I have been there a few times. I think, I dunno, 35,000 people live in the town and there are maybe 15,000 students. Minneapolis is not far away at all if you need to get away for the day or something.

Just that East Coast (and now European) tendency to view all non-East Coast locations with suspicion. Given the range of my applications, I should get over it soon.

It is a bit middle-of-nowhere-y. One of my good friends lives in (fairly) nearby Owatonna and teaches high school in also-nearby Le Seuer; but neither of these cities are too ... noteworthy. (For the record, I live and work roughly two hours Northeast of Mankato). The Twin Cities metro area is an hour-and-a-half away by car -- and you would need a car if you lived in Mankato and wanted to, you know, leave on occasion. With that said, though, it's not a bad city at all. You probably wouldn't need to drive two hours to see any movie. But you might have to drive two hours to see artier stuff that isn't in wide-release.

This is the problem with contemplating a move back to the States. I'm quite fond of my inability to drive, and for the past ten years I've lived in cities where there has been both ample public transportation and, especially in Edinburgh, everything one could ever want within (lengthy) walking distance, and I'm a bit loathe to give that up.

And I'm a really, really bad driver.

R&B is great. There is no five book Prelude, no matter what they say, so you should only read three versions. And really the 1850 is unnecessary.

I was advised to read the Browning by an older academic on the grounds that the club of people who've read it is a good one to get into.
