He stands outside the front of his house reminiscing about the endless summers spent with Ryan. The infinite amount of time they promised each other. They lived out in the country, their closest neighbour 2 miles away; open fields surrounded their quaint little home.
That had all passed and that summer was long gone.
Nothing seems to have changed and Ryan’s voice is still sweet and alluring in it’s own way. But now he can see that Ryan never really showed his true self, just played up the characteristics his lover liked. That was his approach to things, but it was never really him.
Ryan’s father never knew of the couple. After 6 months he got fed up, started to doubt the relationship between them. Was it real?
He’d forgotten how to speak his mind. Ever subdued by Ryan, his words and his fist, like father like son. But he realised this isn’t love. This isn’t even close, he shouted and screamed and made sure it got through to the man before him.
He was wrong about Ryan.
Ryan argued and picked fights. He was always scared. Alone he was vulnerable. He could be punished.
He was an enemy and now he can see that. Can see through his bruises and aches. The countless fights. The lies, that had bled through Ryan’s teeth, unapologetically. Can see him for what he really is.
He’s not waiting anymore. Ryan can find a different home.
