Why does it not make sense as-is? Not that I necessarily think you're wrong, but I didn't find any confusion in it so I'm wondering what's troubling you about it.

(I read Sherlock's being the shooter as a response to Mary's assertion that some people need to die, as him accepting his sociopathy as something of a gift that allows him to make the hard call.)

What troubles me is Sherlock murdering a man and getting away with it through extra-legal channels. I think that does terrible damage to the character and the series' reality long-term.

Oh, gotcha. I read that Mycroft made some sort of plea bargain that resulted in the overseas assignment.
