Oh, wow, I'd never heard this version! Have you heard the Nightwish version? I must admit I have a tiny preference for a female vocalist, but it might just be because that's the version I've imprinted on. ;)
It reminds me a lot of Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman. And I rather want to write a story based on it.
Until I did a search for this song, I had not heard the Nightwish version, but I do indeed like it.
It always seems to me that it would make a wonderful story. I would love to see one written by you. Also, I would like to see one based on it and illustrated by Charles Vess. Have you ever seen his collection The Book of Ballads?
I knew this from a CD justin gave me... one of the 'bad guy' pirates at Bristol had this chosen as his character song. Bristol's 'villains' mixed CD from that year is a *fantastic* CD.
Actually, you heard it before that. Remember the summer after we first met? You came up to Columbus to go to the Ohio State Fair and I drove you back to Dayton? I sang this song for you and then put in the CD on the way back to your parents' place.

I do love ballad/fairy tale retellings, though, so it sounds right up my alley.
(This song, apparently wants to be a story about a wrongly accused highwayman sent to Botany Bay.)
