I'm a fan of Michael Moore's work.  Though I'll concede that he sometimes goes a bit far (e.g, his portrayal of pre-war Iraq in Farenheit 9/11 was a bit heavy-handed), he generally has the right point (e.g., the Iraq War has been a pointless waste of several hundred thousand lives and half a trillion dollars).  I respect him for his courage; he was ( Read more... )

Just a thought on the healthcare system that Massachusetts has been attempting to implement... When I first applied for state-sponsered insurance, I was declined. The brutally honest man on the other end of the phone told me it was mostly due to me being white. He suggested that if I really wanted health insurance, I should go get pregnant, then they would HAVE to give me insurance.

Here's to hoping a country-wide, government aided insurance policy would work better. Because I'm pretty sure we're teetering on falling behind Slovenia.

The absurdity of the state's healthcare system is so bizarre that you have to make a Sanity Check after dealing with its reps (Ia, R'lyeh). I love how you're supposed to be pregnant/have kids if you want health insurance, as if you don't legally count as a person until you spawn progeny. "You say you're in pain? I see. Do you have any kids? No? Well, that means you're not really in pain. Non-parents can't feel pain, you see..."

I think you're probably right about Slovenia.
