Oooh! I am still hoping to see this film! I will have to be good and skip all your spoilers for now. We saw 'Meet the Robinsons' instead last Saturday..which..while being a kids film, was truly excellent. It had some really hilarious moments, especially the angry goth girl at the science fair.
Teacher: Er...dear...aren't fire ants known to be aggressive and bite? Goth: ...only my enemies.
I agree with you on most parts. Part of me liked Death-Proof better as a general movie. However, as a grindhouse homage in and of itself, Planet Terror had much more fidelity. Death-Proof wasn't even really about Stuntman Mike, as it was about the two groups of women that Mikey just happens to terrorize (and be terrorized by...but thats another story :)
I agree that QT was feeling like he had to be a little too clever bringing in characters from Kill Bill, and what not. A little bit tighter pacing, and it would have been much better.
Still, very glad I went, especially as they are going to just be releasing the two movies seperately, without the extra Grindhouse material.
I'm very glad you got to see it, and that you enjoyed it! I can see why you like Death Proof moreso as a general movie. I thought that, in many respects, it was very much like some of Tarantino's other works (e.g., Jackie Brown, the Kill Bill movies). Strong female protagonist(s) + witty dialogue + kickass action sequences = Tarantino's post-Pulp Fiction films. Though I usually love Tarantino's movies (and I still liked this one quite a bit), I think that was my biggest problem with it's role in Grindhouse: it felt more like a 'Tarantino movie' than a grindhouse homage directed by Tarantino. I laughed uproariously throughout Planet Terror and all of the faux trailers, but my laughter was far more subdued in Death Proof, and quite rare. I guess it's fair to say that there are times when I'm in the mood to see character development and there are other times when I'm in the mood to see testicle harvesting, but the two moods rarely (if ever) converge

"Did you just hit a boat" was one of the best one-liners from a slew of great lines in that movie. Either that, or "They f***ed with the wrong Mexican..."
I think the general public has a hard time coping with both Horror and Comedy in one movie (re: Slither & Cabin Fever). Which is really too bad as I find the horror/humor category to be one of my favorites. What's funnier than a bucket of blood, severed limbs, and fake puss?
I'm not really into slasher flicks or slaher porn (as they are sometimes refered to today) as they try to take themselves oh so seriously (such as the Saw, Hostel, or Touristas movies). I find that gore for the sake of funny is a wonderful movie to behold indeed!
Yeah, it's such a shame that the movie has done so poorly in ticket sales. I hope that word of mouth might spread it's appeal in future weeks, but I also had the same hope for 'Serenity', and look at what happened there. *sighs*
