You remind me of a discussion we had at Reign with a specialist in medieval and Renaissance history. She pointed out that one reason the nobility were considered anointed by God was that they looked different -- almost like another species. They were significantly taller, and of course healthier, than everybody else. It's amazing that the reverberations of such a class system could exist into what we consider modern times.
If WWI infantry soldiers were shorter than they used to be, I wonder if Victorian-era factory work took an extra toll. Perhaps farmers who grew their own food had better nutrition?
I seem to remember, in 1988 or 1989, a clipping posted in a bookstore of The Times (the London one of course) when the front page was still births, deaths, and such. It was an annoucement for the golden - 50th - anniversary of the Whimsey-Vane marriage. I was so touched I started crying.
Oh, all of this. I remember the first time I read Whose Body? and how blown away I was and yes yes yes, how it's all gilded in amber and summer sunlight.
