I thought of that, but then decided that the Unbreakable Vow isn't really Dumbledore's style. It negates everything he believes in, like trusting people to make their own choices.

I agree that the Unbreakable Vow doesn't seem very much like Dumbledore. Personally, I think it was a Snape/Lilly thing, despite alleged feelings towards mudbloods.

On the other hand, it explains things quite well.

Did you notice Snape saved Harry and was still teaching him even as Snape was fleeing the scene? althea posted awesomeness about this very topic.
