The cinematography for Belle Reve was, as always, stunning. I mean, the composition of the shots!!! Lionel's window, put in the right hand corner of the screen! It's so unusual, so striking! Just amazing.
This is what I really love about Smallville... some shots are just completely ordinary, meant to just let you see what's happening with the characters and there's no deeper meaning behind it than the practicality of making sure there's a good shot to show them, such as maybe Clark and Lana making out in in the barn. But then, Smallville busts out the comic style for its homages, like Belle Reve, and for the stuff where they have to really SHOW what's going on. I mean, let's face it, there's little dialogue to where Lex is watching Lionel, all Asylum-reversed. But the point is that we need to imagine what Lex is thinking, that Lex is putting himself back in that place, and the atmosphere of Belle Reve is so important to showing why that's horrifying and the cinematography pulls through so well for that.
Tom Welling should always be lit by golden sunlight or the recreation thereof, and have that great hair. And oh, the hair was great, and oh, he was so pretty I nearly died.
Regarding the conversation between Clark and Lex, I truly believe, as I have for the past year or so, that his motivations in wanting to make amends with Clark and their friendship are entirely selfish and driven only by his quest to find out the truth about Clark. And I like that Clark is suspicious, because the show writes him as such an idiot already, that I would hate for Clark to be utterly and completely duped by Lex.
Upon first viewing, the Clana squicked me a little. Not the kissing or copious amounts of making out, but the little relationshippy touches like the chasing and grabbing up the hill or the hand-holding. But the second time I watched it, it didn't bother me at all.
I always said that I wouldn't mind Clana if they were actually HAPPY TOGETHER. Now, I'm not fool enough to believe that it'll last much longer, if even more than the next episode. But it's good to see Clark happy and it's good to see Lana not whining. They both have secrets still, but THIS TIME Lana has some of her own she doesn't exactly want to tell. So she's not harping on him, and so they grin at each other and, at the moment, Clark doesn't have much care in the world.
I like how Clark is a bit more aggressive in the relationship too. Maybe it's because he doesn't have his superpowers, but now he's quite keen to initiate a make-out session or get their shirts off.
So it's not that bad at all, aside from me feeling a bit bad for Chloe, but I expect that and she expects that and I think she's trying to ignore it. And hey, shirtless scenes and rippling muscles.
I like the week's Krypto freaks. I won't pretend that they're not a rip off of so many characters, but hey, they're still pretty cool.
I thought the WB was going to pull their usual advertising stunt, which is, saying that something will happen when it doesn't. While I'm glad that they didn't lose their virginity on a barn futon, I wasn't sure if they would come back to Teh Sex at the end of the episode. So, finally, SV doesn't take the cop-out. And I like how Clark is still wearing his seemingly one pair of blue boxers. Hee.
The First Tiime Conversation was pretty cute. I mean, Clark's grin always does me in, as well as his cute shy admittance. I did want to smack Lana just a little for bringing up Alicia. (HELLO HE FOUND HER DEAD, THX), but then, I'm sure Jason is a bit of a sore spot too. And sure, it makes a little sense to assume that a widower isn't a virgin, but if he says he is....
I will, however, always maintain that I think Kristin Kruek looks like a horrible kisser. I really can't stand to watch her kiss, and it's not because of anything involving Clana, it's just her.
Anyway, that bubble-pinning to the ceiling was pretty damn cool.
Allison Mack, btw, wore that shirt perfectly. How beautiful was she?? Man, I wish I could wear the shirt like that. I both admire and yell at her for standing up to Lex, because while that's awesome, it also never leads to good things for her.
Of course, I loved Clark and Chloe's banter. I love how Clark grinned while he admitted that he was basically worthless and unskilled as a human.
And yeah, the punching... maybe Superman wouldn't do it, but I still think that Clark is growing into that figure.. and let's face it, SV has always been keen on the fighting. I do like that Clark's earlier mistrust of Lex was proven correct. Clark did look a little too smug about bleeding, so I actually have to wonder if punching him was a plan of his own... to goad Lex into a physical fight so he could show him he bleeds. Again, I'm not an expert on the Superman of the future, so maybe he wouldn't do this, but I still stick by my earlier arguments.
Finally, I hope that Lana has one wicked fire insurance policy. She wasn't expecting Clark and yet she had 5 billion candles going. And a fireplace fire. Good lord girl.
