Supernatural

Like everyone else, I'm not surprised that Sam prays and believes in God.

To me, Sam is a creature of balance. I think he searches for balance and has been searching his whole life, hence wanting to leave and go to school and be normal.

For him, it doesn't make sense to have demons and evil without a corresponding "good side." Plus, I believe that Sam has also always been a creature of hope, and it's easier (as Dean would say) to find that hope if you believe in something that powerfully good.

Dean, on the other hand, as he said, believes the world is chaos. To him, there can be evil just because there is. There does not have to be good to also have evil.

All of this to say that these character differences are what makes Supernatural so fantastic. Not just because Dean and Sam and yin and yang, not because in storytelling, characters with opposite beliefs, motives and methods are always more compelling.

As the boys go on in their journey, they slowly see the side of the other. Tonight Dean saw what could be the beginning of faith for him. Whether this lasts remains to be seen, and of course I don't go so far as to say that he believes in God... but perhaps closer to faith in the sense that there can be a balance in the world, that the entire supernatural world is not just evil beings.

And Sam lost some of his faith. It brings the two to more of a middle and it's a separate emotional journey for the both of them.

That was the compelling thing to watch, to see that the more the two brothers experience together, the more they seem to be switching sides and becoming more like the other.
