Deathly Hallows
FINALLY I just finished!!
At first I was worried that wouldn't like it, since I saw some vague LJ posts that sounded like people thought it was crap.
But I really quite liked it.
I was really into the story for the most part and had a great time reading it. There's not too much to say about that, so on to the criticisms.
A little TOO predictable. Or maybe the internets is just too damn smart, because I feel like Snape's memories mirrored every essay written on the Snape Is Innocent subject.
Granted, one of the things I loved about the series was that she was really great with continuity. And I do like that I was able to correctly pull out some pretty obscure lines... for example, I knew Snape would be killed because of this one passage in Goblet of Fire: "missing 6 death eaters, 3 dead in my service, one too cowardly to return... one, who I believe has left me forever, he will be killed of course... and one who remains my most faithful servant... already at Hogwarts"
Clearly, the one who had left forever was Snape, and though Voldemort was fooled by Snape to the end, I still figured that it foreshadowed what would happen to him.
The other thing I guessed was that Wormtail would do something to help save Harry. I thought he would have a bigger role than what he did actually end up having... but nonetheless, when Dumbledore was explaining the life debt in PoA, I knew that it would come up again.
Not that I think myself terribly clever, because they're not hard to figure out.
Now, I did like that Harry did.. die? But then not? In some way it was a bit of a copout, because it wasn't taking a stance one way or the other, but I also felt that it was more satisfying to have both happen... I don't know. Obviously I have mixed feelings on it.
The ending was pure, pure cheese. It was exactly the happy ending I expected if Harry lived... and I sorta thought JKR had a bit more tragedy in her than that. I thought that if Harry ended up living, Ginny would die... I guess I thought she really was that dark and that she really would never make Harry fully happy.
And all of the children's names... DEAR LORD THE CHEESE.
And, finally... SNAPE!!!!!!!!! HEDWIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH GOD HEDWIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
