Hmmm... It depends a little on where you're going, but I'd say the best time to visit Japan would either be spring for the sakura (cherry blossoms) or fall for the changing momiji (Japanese maple) leaves. Personally, I like the fall. It's a little easier to plan for, too, since sakura season's been kinda wanky lately and only lasts for a week. Either spring or fall would be better temperature-wise, too, since summer is quite HOT. *fans madly*
Do you have a target city in mind? I assume you'll hit Tokyo... If you come for a seasonal thing (sakura or momiji), Kyoto's something of a must as well. :)
