Gaijin Life in Aomori Fall

Nov 14, 2006 20:08

So I've been writing a lot about life as an ALT. In fact, all of my correspondence over the last 3 months (with the sole exception of my Elizabethan Insults insert :) has been a "Life on the JET Program" testament, which is all well and good...except there are, of course, other things going on over here. I've decided, then, that I should branch out ( Read more... )

Hi Mel,
In your e-mail you note "And for the rest of you, who love everything I write..." THAT'S ME!

At the end of your post, you were talking about snow and the prospect of learning to ski; and you said, "so I can't really say where I'll be in the coming months." Just make sure it isn't in the hospital nursing a broken leg from venturing on the slopes. :) ...but you will never get a better chance to learn how to ski. They just haven't built ski slopes in Florida... not yet anyway.

How is your transportation working out? You seem to be getting around and have not mentioned it as a problem. Maybe you found a young Japanese boy with car and unlimited expense account.

Love you. Grandpa

My only skiing experience so far was in Colorodo when I was...I don't even know how old. It was many-a-year ago, and did not go well. I remember ending up face down in the snow with my legs causing me all sorts of discomfort and awkwardness behind me. So I'm thinkin' I'll resist the ski thing.
Snowboarding, on the other hand, I am considering...
Transportation is still an issue. People are pretty much willing to drive me places for shopping and such, but 1) I feel like an inconvenience, and 2) I never get to go anywhere alone. One of these weekends I'll be heading out via train and bus...I'm sure I can get anywhere I wanna go. Coming back is more of a problem. ^^;
No young Japanese boys with cars and expense accounts...probably for the better. ;)

It may be the farming nature of my Japanese acquaintances here that makes me the point of weird looks when I say I like these big black menaces...then again, it could be that I am genuinely strange. :)

I'm gonna say a little from column A, a little from column B. ;)

And according to this, you call it a ballet, herd, bevy, or whiteness of swans. I've actually heard "ballet" and "whiteness" before, as it happens, but that doesn't really make them sound any less stupid. ^>^

Well, if ya think about it, "swan" is a stupid word, too.
Thanx for the research. We all know herds are for horses and goats and...I dunno...llamas? GEEZ, English. I think it should be flock. "Flock" of swans sounds better than a "bevy" of swans.
Hehe. Bevy.

Fin. ^^

Your writing is so descriptive and poetic and FUN! I am enjoying every word of it. Keep it up, and be sure to keep a copy for your someday book about your travel adventures! I am so envious that you get to see all those neat birds. Curiously enough, for the first time we are experiencing flocks of crows in Florida in the fall! The other day, there were at least 10 on the school grounds, standing guard over the unused playground equipment. I think they're just passing through. They are not as bold as your crows. We also have seen bald eagles nearby - remember the power station net to the school? They seem to be nesting on top of it!

Love,

Mom

Florida crows are a bunch of wooses. Our crow-zillas would eat them alive. Whole. Two at a time. ;)
Yay for the bald eagles returning. I've heard Rachel say they have them in Placido Bayou, so maybe they migrated over, on account of that strangely ideal nesting ground.
Are the ospreys still around?
