Traumatizing Tabemono @_@

Ok, I'm gonna try to write this one, though it's not gonna be easy. Be forewarned that the coming story isn't exactly a pleasant one, but it is undeniably the sort of thing I started this blog to catalog (the sort of situation where my side vs the Japanese side are so viciously mismatched that the verbal communication gap is only one of many ( Read more... )

Hey Mel, I'm sorry you had such a traumatic experience with the food. I love Japanese food and I love seafood but I have never had an encounter like that before. Have you been to Korea? My friends tell me that they eat almost all their sashimi alive. There's even this thing that's equivalent to mochi (in that there's the danger of dying while eating it) but maybe I will spare you the rest of the details. Anyway, I'm sorry this happened to you. :(

I guess it was bound to happen at some point in this country, now that I've had time to think about it. Stay long enough over here, and you're bound to run into just about everything. *sigh*

I HAVE been to Korea, as a matter of fact, and though my travelling partner and I ate next to nothing for that week due to the fact that EVERYTHING IS SO GDAMN SPICY over there, we didn't, as far as I recall, delve into any sashimi...and if what you say is true, I'm glad. :\ Then again, maybe we DID, and I'm working my way through PTSD 2 years later! (but still, I don't think so. ;)

...How does one face death by mochi??

Hey, I just wanna say thanks to everyone's support after this entry. I've gotten calls and e-mails (only one post so far ON THE SITE here...seriously, people!), and it's been nice finding reassurance that I'm not the only one who finds this sort of thing upsetting--even downright revolting! Not much variety of opinion out here in the Japanese boonies.

So thanks! ^_^

PS: We're several weeks later, and there have been no further signs of living food...for those of you who were wondering. ;)
