Survey regarding Buffy and Musicals

Oct 05, 2008 18:54

Hi all

I'm doing some research on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, particularly on the episode "Once More, With Feeling" (the musical episode). In particular, I'm looking for information on how the episode was received, and how it affected people, particularly if they are/were fans of musical theatre before or after seeing the episode. I've created the ( Read more... )

1. Yes, love'em. In fact, I have a particular weakness for movie musicals, on average perhaps even more so than stage ones ( ... )

Thanks for your replies.

Hmm.. Why do you think you like movie musicals more than stage musicals?

"Musicals were a pretty big movie genre where I grew up,"
Where do you mean? Buffalo (wasn't it)? Or Belarus (...wasn't it)?

Re: Chicago: Obviously you saw the revival on the Tony's, not the original production, right? Would you have been born yet, for the original cast (I was 5, so I think you were not yet born)? :) What about the film of Chicago, did that stand up to your view of the stage play (I forget if you saw it with me or not)?

I'm curious to know more about your "Americanization," and how that might have affected your taste for musicals. Were you fairly well "Americanized" when you saw Chicago? Are musicals common, popular, around at all, in Belarus?

"Two of these are 'gimmick episodes'" - which two do you mean? I think some might say all three are gimmick episodes...

Also, do you consider yourself a geek? :)

By where I grew up I meant the ex-USSR. (Belarus was not its own cultural entity when I lived in it, USSR was). And I think that's why I have a weakness for movie musicals in particular. As much as I love a good stage production, as I child I had much more exposure to musical movies than musical theatre ( ... )

So you had easy access to movie musicals in the (ex-)USSR? Cool!

  1. No, hate them.
  2. I have a really hard time hearing lyrics set to music. I end up focusing on the rhythm or the melody, so I'll only catch snippets of lyrics. Plus, songs tend to be a really slow way of advancing plot, which makes the pacing down a little bit. I love singing and being in musicals, though. I just don't like watching them.
  3. I was a dancer and singer in two high school productions, Fame and Bye Bye Birdy. In college, I performed in Assassins. All three of these were bit parts. I played trombone for seven years, tuba for six years, flute for a year, all in school bands: orchestral, jazz, and marching. In church, I sang lead in the youth choir for four or five years, and performed in Messiah three times (another bit part). I started performing in non-musical plays in the third grade, starting with The Gold Elf (Santa), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Theseus), a couple of forgettable church plays, and then in college moving onto The Fantasticks (Mortimer), Metamorphoses (Narrator, Zeus), The Last Unicorn (Schmendrick), Baby ( ... )

Thanks for your answers. Very interesting. I'm surprised you hate musicals, cause you seem to have a passion for them... (yeah, Hate is a passion, but that's not what I meant) but clearly I really don't know you that well ( ... )

Yeah, Labyrinth the movie. A friend of mine set it to the stage. In Assassins, I was just various bystanders in the chorus.

I'm not sure that I could say that Bounce turned me off to musicals. More that it was a realization that I didn't really care for most of the ones I saw. I also spent a lot more time around people who listened to music for the lyrics, so this was kind of a conjunction of the two.

I think they showed me OMWF because it's their favorite :)

That's too bad (about Bounce).

Cool, thanks!

How did OMWF differ from the other musicals you'd seen? How did it make you see musicals in a different light?

How (or why) do you still think of it in different terms from other musicals?

Yes, absolutely pass this on to your friends. I'm just gathering information, so whomever wants to respond is more than welcome! Thanks!

1. Do you consider yourself a fan of Musicals or Musical Theatre?

An intense fan, it is always my first choice of entertainment if given any choices at all.

2. Why or why not?

I love the whole idea of living in a musical, where everything and everyone comes together in song. I love the way that the songs move the story along and the way that they fit in with the rest of the story.

3. Do you have any musical (voice, instrumental, etc), theatrical, dance, or musical theatre training, background, or experience? If so, please describe. I have a voice, some say quite a good one, although a bit odd for a female, I"n not quite a tenor, more of a contratenor, but I've got more tenor range than alto. I also play harmonica (pretty well), saxaphone, flute, piano, dulcimer and ukelele in varying degrees of ability depending on how recently I've played. With the sax, I was in the University of Maryland Jazz Ensemble, its a large school and was a small ensemble, guess that goes to show ability. As a child I took dance lessons like just ( ... )
