I thought it was very interesting a lot of the episode, but then I guess they felt they had to "action it up" during the end. At least they're still exploring the reactions the dolls have to each other even without (conscious?) memories, though.
I wondered if Echo would go blind again when the cult leader slapped her again, but they didn't go that far (it might have been over the top to go there).
The FBI agent showing up and being unable to talk his way into seeing the remainders of the flock was kind of lame -- Echo might have been taken away already, ok, but he couldn't talk to any of them?
It seems like kinda shoddy surgery if a slap can knock the camera loose, or whatever it did, but there you go. That said though, I still thought the idea of a "miracle" happening to give her her sight back was interesting. The problem was she seemed to change her attitude and get her strength back so quickly. And boy was she able to read easily and well for not having done it since age 9. Alex thinks that may be part of the girl's (Echo's) latent personality shining through, but I'm not sure yet.
I like that they're exploring the dolls' reactions to each other, like the side story with Victor. That was fun. :)
FWIW: The Onion had an interview with Eliza Dushku (in the AV Club Section so it was a real interview - not a joke story) and she basically said that for the first half dozen episodes the network was doing a lot of meddling. Then they realized that they should just let Josh do his thing.
So if it gets to Episode 6-7 then things should improve.
On the other hand I find the whole setup somewhat disturbing. These are not good guys. These are not even the good people doing bad things because society is bad like Firefly. I think that the Dollhouse is run by the bad guys. There may be badder guys out there, but that doesn't change the fact that they are bad.
That's interesting. It doesn't seem like the tasks they're doing are necessarily bad, but the people who run the dollhouse may be. But we just don't know enough about them, or about the dolls and who they were before they joined. I assume it'll be exposed little by little as we go.
This friday's ep is being marketed as the one to watch, so perhaps things will get better this week. I wonder specifically what kind of meddling the network was doing.
Yep, I agree. I am only watching at this point because I keep hoping it will get better. I like Joss's stuff but if the next ep does not pull it all together and take a direction I will probably stop watching. Well, cross your fingers, they are billing the next one as the ep not to miss.
