The Oz-verse and its connections to Glee

And in the early books (I don't know if it changed in the later ones?) you could only get to Oz from the air. Balloons, storms, something enchanted to fly.

They got to New York via airplane.

Oh, really good catch!

Travel to Oz is always precipitated by either a natural disaster or magic. Getting back to America can originally be accomplished merely by taking chances in a hot air balloon. It gets progressively difficult to get in and out of Oz once magical barriers go up in Book 6, but the protagonists usually have magical artifacts to help them along.
