I seem to be in a project-launching mood these days. also I just got the go-ahead on this from my co-conspirator (who is too busy to take a lead role, and so will remain nameless unless she chooses otherwise

Would you think of introducing this in tumblr_refuge? It would be cool to get a diverse group of folks... so there's always some conversation going. :-)
Perhaps you could have nominations that lead to a poll, and then the person/people who nominated could be asked to write a little bit about the fic, why they nominated it, etc - in an attempt to start off the conversation.
yes, that's a good idea! Although I also like the thought of combining this with corpsereviver2's idea (which hadn't occurred to me) about giving everyone a turn to pick a story: whoever is in charge can pick 2 or 3 fics, talk a bit about each, and then set up a poll, so the community can choose which of that person's faves we read.
And I love that this sounds as if it's actually going to happen(!) so now we can be in mutual admiration while being in a Sherlock fic reading group! Hurray! ;D
I've had this suggested to me as well as a mod at bbcsherlock. I love it! I would also suggest some kind of introduction to newbies to the Sherlock fandom. Like a list of essential fanfics to read and why.
But definitely do it categorically...some people are not into certain fic genres. Personally, I'm not a big fan of magical realism so I can be sure to avoid those discussions. On the other hand, it could also open it up for me to realize that I actually am interested in that genre and that I've had a different idea about it all this time.
I've never done a book club in any context so I suppose I don't know what it would look like. I like the idea of discussions, though. I'm envisioning a system where someone would make a comm post stating they'd like to discuss a fanfic (with a link to said fanfic) and then maybe write out their own thoughts under a cut? Would that person do some discussion questions to open for the comment section?
I agree about marking things by category, or sure: it seems like there's enough interest to sustain multiple parallel conversations, organized by genre, but even if that trickles off and it makes more sense to drop down to one conversation at a time, we should at the very least continue to tag our fics by genre, and to mix up genres and styles
