Thanks to ferretgirl  for once again putting this together. You do a terrific job!

“What the hell is this?” Timmy demanded furiously.

Donald looked up as Timmy slammed a newspaper onto his desk.

“Hello to you too, honey.”

Timmy snatched the paper up and shook it at Donald. “Don’t you dare try to charm your way out of this, Donald Strachey.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Donald sighed. “Do you mind telling me what it is I’ve done?”

“As if you don’t know!”

“I don’t!”

Donald had forgotten that they weren’t alone until Kenny cleared his throat.

“I think I’ll take off to lunch now.”

Donald had never seen Kenny move so fast. It would have been quite comical if it wasn’t for the death glare they were both getting from Timmy.

“Didn’t you want him to stay?”  The bitterness in the question shocked Donald.

“What is wrong with you?

Glaring, Timmy threw the newspaper at him. “That!”

The paper, Albany’s only gay newspaper, was opened to the society page. Donald glanced at the black and white photo and grimaced.

“Shit.” This is going to ruin everything.

“That’s all you have to say? Shit?”

Donald had been so absorbed in what this picture meant he’d forgotten he had a much more important problem to deal with at the moment.

“Honey, I can…”

“What Donald? How the hell are you going to explain this away? I trusted you. And what do you do? Make a laughing stock out of me to the whole damn community! And with him! How long has it been going on, huh? How many late night stakeouts were really just cover stories? I bet the two of you had a good laugh at what a gullible fool I am!”

Feeling totally drained, Timmy dropped down on the couch adjacent to Donald’s desk. This had to be a terrible dream, Donald would wake him up any minute and everything would be okay again.

Donald knew the picture looked bad. He knew he should have done it. He knew Tim had every right to be mad but at the same time he couldn’t believe that Tim had automatically assumed the worst. He looked down at the picture again.  There for the whole world to see was him kissing Kenny Kwon.

Whatever anger Donald was feeling quickly subsided the second he looked over at Timmy. Gone was the rage that had been on his face when he came barging in. Now there was only a broken, defeated man instead. Donald felt something in his chest tighten and before he even realized it he was kneeling in front of Timmy.

“Timothy, it isn’t what it looks like.”

Timmy tried to get up but Donald would have none of that. He grabbed him by the shoulders and held him firmly in place.

“It looks like you were kissing your office manager when you were supposed to be on a stakeout.”

“I was on a stakeout… sort of.”

Timmy didn’t seem convinced but he stopped trying to pull away, much to Donald’s relief.

“Do you remember about a week ago Daniel Jenkins and his partner were beaten up?”

Timmy nodded. Daniel was still in intensive care. It had also put hate crimes back on Albany’s political front burner.

“The day after it happened, I was hired by James McIntyre to investigate the beatings.” Donald quickly held up his hands. “I know, I know. I told you that McIntyre hired me to follow his lover. I should have told you the truth. I just figured you would worry less if you didn’t know what I was really doing.”

“Kissing Kenny.”

“Timothy, come on.”

Sighing, Timmy motioned for Donald to continue.

“Well, it seems that Jenkins wasn’t the first attack.”

Momentarily forgetting he was furious at Donald, Timmy perked up. “There were more?”

Donald bite back the smile that was threatening to emerge at Tim’s attitude change. He knew this case would interest him, which was exactly why he hadn’t told him in the first place.

“That’s why McIntyre hired me. The same thing happened to him and his partner two weeks ago.”

“Why didn’t we hear about it?”

“They didn’t go to the police. Bastard takes their licenses and tells them if they talk he’ll come back and finish the job. According to McIntyre, there have been at least four other couples that he knows of.”

“Six couples? Don, you have to tell the police.”

“I’ve already talked to Bailey. They knew the Jenkins beating wasn’t the first. Seems it has been going on for a couple of months. Not including the couples I told him about, he said there were four attacks. Bailey thinks this guy is escalating; the attacks are getting closer together and more and more brutal.”

Timmy felt a shiver run down his spine as understanding dawned on him. “Donald, you’re using yourself as bait, aren’t you?”

Donald shrugged. “No one has been able to give a description of the guy. It seems the only way to get him is to catch him in the act. We have to stop him before he kills someone.”

“You and Kenny?”

“And Bailey. Look, all we have to go on is that all the attacks have occurred after the victims leave the Rat’s Nest. I figured even if he didn’t take the bait, I could keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

“Why Kenny?”

“What? I dunno. I didn’t think Bailey and I could make a convincing couple.”

“What about me?”

“You and Bailey? That’s just nasty, Tim.”

“You know exactly what I mean, Donald Strachey.”

“It’s Kenny’s job.”

“I’ve helped you before.”

“True and you always do an excellent job but not this. I couldn’t risk it. I couldn’t risk you.”

“So instead you lied and kissed Kenny.”

“The kiss wasn’t anything. Our lips barely even touched. We just wanted it to seem like we were kissing”

“Congratulations, it did.”

“Timothy, you can’t seriously believe I would be involved with Kenny.”

“What was I suppose to think?”

“I’m sorry, honey. I’m sorry for not telling you and I’m sorry you had to see this stupid picture.”

“Why did you lie to me?

“I didn’t want you worrying. You do too much of that as it is.”

Timmy raised his eyes. “And?”

Donald sighed. Sometimes Timmy knew him too well. “I knew you’d insist on going with me instead of Kenny. I couldn’t bare it if something happened to you.”

Timmy stared at Donald for what seemed like an eternity to Donald but was actually only a few seconds.

“I’m sorry I doubted you.” Timmy finally said.

Donald smiled. “Friends again?”

Timmy rolled his eyes before leaning down and kissing Donald.

“I love you, Timmy.”

“Donald, what about Kenny?”

Donald groaned in frustration. “Tim, I told you it didn’t mean anything.”

“Not that” Timmy waved his hand dismissively, as if they had even been arguing about him minutes before. “Is he safe? Out there all by himself.”

Donald chuckled. “He’s fine. The bastard seems to take great pleasure in making his victims watch as the other gets the shit beat out of him.”

“That’s horrible!” Timmy shivered. “Donald, why are you smiling?”

“Five minutes ago you wanted to kill Kenny and now you’re all worried about him.”

“Well, that’s because if anything happened to him you would blame yourself. And just who do you think would have to clean up that mess?”

“Are you saying I’m a mess?”

“In more ways then one.”

“Cute.”

“Don?”

“Yeah?”

“I better not catch you kissing another man ever again.”

“You won’t, Timmy. I promise.”

“Good. Now, should we stop at the Rat’s Nest on our way home or go back later tonight?”
