Blind Kitten

Unless there's something else very major wrong with it...I think I will still take the kitten. I've been doing a bit of reading about blind cats and apparently they can do pretty well...you just can't move their food or litter box all the time, and it's better to not move furniture too often. But...honestly I don't see that being that big of a deal ( Read more... )

I have these two friends (a married couple) who own a blind cat, and he is pretty much the sweetest cat I've ever seen, no exaggeration. And it's totally amazing how well he copes with being blind. He even plays on a totally normal kitty climbing structure that they bought for him.

But yeah, my friends said that so long as they don't move stuff around too often, he can find his way around without much trouble. Occasionally there are accidents, like if something spooks him and he tries to dash somewhere and temporarily forgets where he is in relation to other stuff. And early on when he's figuring out where stuff is he might try to climb up somewhere and then not be able to figure out how to get down, but if you just keep an eye on him like you would for any pet it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks....hopefully she won't get too scared and start running into walls. Though I suppose that's funniest home video material...they seem to love that stuff :-/

Now that you aren't working, can you really afford another kitty? :(

I do have some money saved up and put aside for the kitty. In general having a cat doesn't cost that much in my opinion, and I don't think 2 will double my cost except for the vet. BUT there is a low cost government subsidized clinic here which we got my kitty spayed at. They also do shots as well, so for about $70 I can get her spayed and tested and vaccinated, and that's not very much. Other than that, just needs lots of love...which I have plenty of :)

I had a cat with juvenile cataracts many years ago. The veterinary ophthalmologist said he could most likely see some shadows and shapes but he was pretty much blind. He got along fine as long as I didn't move things around but usually adjusted quickly if I did have to move things. He managed to steal small objects to play with, like my earrings and razor. Every once in a while he'd get confused and stop and meow loudly where he was until I asked him what was wrong and then he'd follow my voice to me ( ... )

Thank you :) this makes me feel better. My mom was surprised that the vet said both eyes were probably blind...because my kitten is the first to do everything! She was the first to walk. First to come to my mom's calling. First to start exploring. First to run. First to eat normal cat food....

She's supposedly really sweet...so perhaps her blindness won't slow her up at all. I imagine *I* am more worried about it than she ever would be.
