As the title suggests, I've been on an emotional rampage, similar to what movies refer to as 'the evangelical holy roller' syndrome. This has, for the most part, been internal. There has been a few spouts here or there, but the majority has been not only inside my head, but my heart and soul as well ( Read more... )

Tim,
Friendship and love are not externally controlled concepts. If you think they are, then of course they are not things you could have in your life. They are for others to choose to give or not, and for you to work to keep. I say "to keep" rather than "to deserve," because I believe that all human beings inherintly deserve love and friendship, even when they repeatedly push them away.
Integrity is not an externally controlled concept either. It is an internally controlled one. Either you attempt and consistently work to cultivate it in yourself, or you don't. It isn't something you are given or that can come from the outside. It's all you.
My mother has a cross-stitch sampler that caught my eye the other day and made me think of this:
"Character is a Victory, not a gift."

Mara:
Friendship and love are external goods because you are not the soul controller of them, there are external controls such as the other person and their choice to give or not. This is the essential meaning of external. I too believe that all beings deserve love and friendship, but it up to us to manage and guage our relationships.
Integrity is viewed by others, that again makes it external. One can be virtuous and to presue integrity but it is ultimately others who view us as being integritous (word??)
I also agree with your mothers cross-stitch, Character (ie. the soul) is a victory, an evergoing battle with oneself in their pursuit of happiness. It is never given to us, we must figure out things for ourselves and thats called living.

Enough Aristotle, the class is moving on, the exam went well and I will have to read him for my own enjoyment.
PS. I enjoyed the read on your political rant.
