As soon as Ianto had gotten done laughing at Jack for falling out of a tree he'd helped the older man get out of his clothes and into a hot shower. Jack's back had looked like some sort of goth patchwork quilt with his black and blue marks and Ianto had merely rolled his eyes and shoved the older man towards a fluffy towel when Jack had tried to ( Read more... )

Now that the 'boys' had had some time to try out the tracking program she sent, Tosh decided to see if she could catch Jack or Ianto at work, and check in on things.

Truth be told, she was also sort of hoping they might have stumbled over a new artifact or something that needed studying.

Hello, is anyone there?

Hello, Tosh. Came the reply from Ianto's PM signature.

Tosh smiled at the screen. How are things, Ianto? Are you keeping our Captain out of trouble?

Chuckling, his smile perhaps more than most people ever saw, Ianto typed.

I wish. Silly bugger went out and fell out of a tree yesterday. 30 feet out of a tree.

For just a second, a flash of fear shot through Tosh, before she gained control of her reactions and reminded herself that for Jack, a thirty-foot fall was nothing. Painful, of course, and she winced in sympathy, but at least she knew now she'd never have to worry about an accident like that making them leaderless.

Do I want to know what he was up to? Was it at least job-related? Weevil hunting, investigating a Rift fluctuation...alien pickles...

Teaching one of the local students how to climb a tree, Ianto shared with a sort of unholy glee. A young lady he's sort of taken a shine to in a sister like fashion. Seems he...

Before Ianto could type further the IM signature CapttoU logged into the conversation.

Thank you, Ianto. I can take the story from here.

Damn. Tosh's interest had just been caught by this 'little sister' figure in Jack's life. She'd have to try and catch Ianto sometime when she knew the Captain would be out.

Oh hello, Jack! I was just hearing a fascinating story about your latest adventures.

Up in the study Jack rolled his eyes and wondering if he should just take out an add, inviting poking and laughter.

Adventure is one word for it, he agreed dryly. So, what's up Toshiko? Owen being impossible again?

Not this evening, actually, he's gone out on a date. He SAYS he's out for drinks with his mates, but I don't think he has any mates. So Gwen and I figure date.

I thought I'd check in on that weather program.

Probably down at that leather club he likes to frequent now and again. Jack typed.

It's running like a charm, Tosh. Beautiful work as always. Jack began, then he tapped his fingers on the side of the keyboard and continued. But would you mind explaining to me why the local news report is suggesting that I get your boss to let you take a vacation over here?

Tosh burst out laughing, and there was a notable pause before her response, during which she had to share Jack's remark with Gwen, who had heard her laughter.

There was probably going to be some mischief plotted between the two women before Owen's return to work the next morning.

Thank you, I was a little concerned about writing it so that it set up its own parameters properly, but it sounds like it worked. If Dean is having any trouble running it, I'll be happy to walk him through a tutorial.

What local news report is that?

Jack sort of blanked out on the technobabble and honed back in on the news report bit.

Local news station around here. Friday night the woman doing the reporting had a little message for me. To tell your boss to let you come over for a visit. I didn't know you were talking to the locals.

Whoops.

We stumbled across each by accident, in one of the public intelligence archives. I asked her some questions to make sure she had clearance, and she mentioned working for M, so I asked if she was in Milieux. I didn't tell her anything important, Jack. Not even my last name, or any mention of Torchwood. We just established that she knew you, and I jokingly asked her to tell you to send a message to my 'boss' to let me come for a visit.

Tosh held her breath, hoping that Jack wasn't going to consider it a breach of security. She'd really had no idea this Veronica would announce her message on the news.

The IM sat and blinked for a long time as Jack considered just how to go about addressing this situation.

Particularly in the light of events such as Mary. Of all his team, Tosh was the one who sometimes had the hardest time keeping her guard in place. Not because she was thoughtless but because sometimes she felt too much.

Tosh, you know how dangerous a random encounter with a stranger can be. Do I need to remind you of Mary and how much she 'knew' and how that made her seem safer than she really was? Also ... M's secretary????

Jack, she said that she knew you! From there in Milieux, and also a version of you from high school. I didn't offer any kind of information, I never even told her what I do. And she only thinks that we're friends.

Jack was right, of course, and Tosh leaned her face into her hand for a moment. She got too caught up in sharing the experience sometimes. Being suspicious of people didn't come naturally.

You're right, Jack, and I'm sorry. It won't happen again.

He knew that being suspicious didn't come naturally to Tosh. In many ways, she was still their innocence.

Tosh, I know. Just, be careful is all I'm asking. The only people in this town who know about Torchwood at the moment are working for it but it's a small town and I've already had Ret-Con fail once.
