Character Name: Komaba Hajime
Series: Doubt
Timeline: Beginning of Chapter 7; suspicious of Yuu being the ‘wolf’

Character Background: Hajime is just one of the five people in the story who become involved in a game known as “Rabbit Doubt”. All of the players are known as ‘rabbits’; however one is actually a wolf in disguise. Via cell phone, the players must figure out who the ‘wolf’ is amongst the rabbits. If the wolf is found out, then the remaining rabbits (if some have already ‘perished’) survive and win the game. If not, the wolf wins and all of the rabbits, sadly, end up dead.

Anyways! One day Hajime agrees to meet up with the other four players (Yuu, Rei, Haruka, and Eiji) in real life. However, he never ends up joining with the others and is actually knocked out and taken to what seems to be a warehouse of sorts. He wakes up and is soon joined by Yuu and Mitsuki. The two discover Rei’s body in another room nailed to the wall and her wheelchair turned over on the floor. Had Hajime already seen the lifeless body on the wall before? Or was this the first time? We’re actually not sure because it is never clarified in the canon. Boo hiss. Hajime then introduces himself while attempting to calm down Mitsuki, also stating that he is a medical student.

Haruka arrives shortly after Yuu and Mitsuki and asks if the others from the group had also been brought there. Hajime outright lies and responds by telling her that it’s just them four in the building, completely dismissing Rei’s death (ultimately manipulating the situation and trying to establish control over the others). At the same time, Haruka shows the others a barcode that had been stamped on her skin just below her collar bone. Being the smart one he is, Hajime figures out that the barcode is used to open locked doors in the building.

Hajime and Yuu then leave the room, exploring outside the corridor to see if they can figure out where they are, if anyone else is in the same situation, or what have you. While out on their little excursion, Yuu questions Hajime about not meeting up with them earlier. Hajime lies (as we find out later) and tells Yuu that he had received a message from him, telling him that the time had been changed. Shock for Yuu? Yes.

They bump into Eiji and all three make their way back to the room, everyone excited to see everyone else. Not exactly. Walking back into the room where Rei is nailed to the wall, Hajime discovers her cell phone and opens a text message. The message reads “Rabbit Doubt. Start.” with the picture of a rabbit at the gallows. It is then that Hajime voices his thoughts, stating that they are indeed playing the real life game of Rabbit Doubt and that one of them is the wolf and Rei’s killer. They proceed to fight, mainly Eiji attacking Hajime for acting so calm and being so forward with his words.

After they get their ya-yas out, they all realize that each one of them has a barcode stamped somewhere on their body, meaning that there are multiple doors that are to be opened if they are to escape. The only one who doesn’t show a barcode is Yuu, and automatically he becomes one of suspicion for Hajime. More fighting ensues since Eiji believes Hajime is the wolf. Yuu eventually intercepts a punch meant for Mitsuki after she slaps Eiji to knock some sense into him. They go back to normal discussion, Hajime telling the others that it’s best they stay together to avoid getting picked off by the wolf. What a smart one that Hajime is. But then Yuu blacks out from the trauma, oh noes!

Hajime and the others carry (we can assume) Yuu to another part of the floor and proceed to investigate every nook and cranny. Yuu regains consciousness in time to see Hajime close a door on Eiji, since the smarty decided to use his barcode to open the door to the bathroom and not some other important room. At first all are shocked at Hajime doing such a thing, the girls asking Yuu to use his barcode to unlock the door. Hajime argues that they need to conserve the rest of the barcodes and that using one to unlock the door to Eiji out would just be a waste. Yuu agrees with Hajime’s reasoning and also states that they should save the rest of their ‘keys’.

The four proceed to investigate another room, one equipped with medical gear and the like, and come across someone who may be the wolf in a rabbit mask. Hajime and Yuu go at him from behind, but receive no acknowledgement. The man falls from the chair and they discover that he, too, has a barcode. Hajime suggests they use his barcode to open another door, and they do just that, opening a door to what seems to be an office of some sort. Haruka suggests they open a possible other door in the room they were just in, but Hajime points out that Yuu’s barcode is the last barcode they have and their only chance of escaping. Always the rational one to calm everyone down, he suggests they look around for clues as to why they are there or how they can escape. Haruka peruses a book and then leaves with Mitsuki to go to the restroom. While reading through files, Hajime and Yuu hear a scream and then see Haruka exit the restroom, scalpel in hand. She shows the book to Yuu and Hajime and then demands Yuu confess to him and Mitsuki being the wolf. With Haruka’s accusation and Yuu’s confession of not having a barcode, Hajime fully suspects that he is the wolf and restrains him in a straight jacket.

Haruka leaves to investigate by herself and Hajime is stuck with a tied up Yuu while he looks at surveillance cameras. Not seeing anything out of the ordinary, he decides to do some investigating on his own, leaving Yuu on the floor in the surveillance room. Where he goes, we’re not exactly sure at this point in time. Sometime later he comes back after investigating and having obtained a scalpel from the medical room (more or less for protection), and Yuu tells him about watching the screens and Eiji being in trouble. They head to the room where Eiji is being held and confirms the boy’s death. After retrieving the cell phone from behind the door, Yuu then attacks Hajime and puts him in the straightjacket since he thoroughly believes Hajime is the wolf.

However, Hajime is released some time later when his medical expertise is needed for an ill Mitsuki. He treats her wound, and believes he should venture around with Yuu to find a way out. Yuu locks him back up and wanders off by himself once again. Later he runs into Hajime (Hajime using the scalpel he had in his possession to free himself) and more arguing takes place, both believing the other to be the wolf. All of a sudden, Hajime is stabbed in the back by the person in a rabbit mask. Not only is Hajime now free of suspicion, but his life is hanging on by a thread as Yuu dresses his wounds as best as he can. Yuu ONCE AGAIN takes off by himself in search of the murderer.

Hajime is drug over (more than likely by Mitsuki) to the original stairwell from the beginning and hears the conversation that takes place between Mitsuki and Yuu about she being the one who killed everyone for their lies. It is then that Hajime tells Yuu about finding and moving Haruka’s body when he left the other in the surveillance room. He was hoping to get a confession from Yuu, believing he would think Haruka's body was Mitsuki's. Thus, he would be able to discover the true identity of the wolf. Hajime then divulges that he is actually a detective and not the medical student they all thought he was. He continues, explaining that everything he did to the other members of the group was to find out the identity of the killer. With a scalpel Hajime gives him, Yuu frees himself and Hajime from their bindings. Hajime then passes out from exhaustion.

He and Yuu are rescued and meet up in the hospital, Yuu trying to convince him that Mistuki had nothing to do with being the wolf, that Rei had hypnotized her. Hajime (now in a wheelchair) disregards anything he has to say by responding that forensics has yet to find any evidence of Rei actually being at the scene. He decides to return to the scene of the crime with a team and receives a call from Yuu. While Yuu is frantically trying to convince him on the phone that someone on his team has been hypnotized by Rei, Hajime is killed.

Throughout the story, we learn much about Hajime and just who he is as a person and detective. From his first scene with the other players from the game, we discover that he is one manipulative SOB. First it was the lie to Haruka about how many people had arrived. Yuu could have argued on the subject but he didn't, showing the influence and 'power' Hajime had over him at the time. Then there was that lie to Yuu about the text message, hoping to gauge something from Yuu's response. The manipulation is also present when he frees himself the second time and confronts Mitsuki, trying to convince her to remove her clothes to prove that she's not the wolf. He does something similar to Yuu, pushing him with each accusation and even demanding to see a barcode that only the wolf would have in hopes of getting a confession out of him. And how could we forget the hanging of the corpse in the large room to once again try to get a confession from Yuu? Poor guy...

Another awesome attribute of Hajime is how observant he is. Who was the one who figured out that the stamped on barcodes opened locked doors? Why that was Hajime, of course. Also, who deduced that each barcode could ONLY be used once? Hajime again. Once leaving the large room, Hajime only continued to amaze with his observations. After the false wolf falls from the chair, Hajime notices that the man had probably OD'd on morphine (after seeing the vial of the stuff) by looking at marks on his arm, characteristic of morphine 'poisoning'. With the mask having been removed by Yuu, the man attacks Yuu. After some struggle, he suffocates and dies. Right off the bat, Hajime knows something is up and sees a tack inside the rabbit mask. He deduces that based on the reaction of the man, the tack must have been dipped in a quick acting poison. Later on, his observation prowess burns bright when he has Yuu reach into the room Eiji is in to retrieve the cell phone. Neither of them can open the door all the way, and there's only one exit...Obviously he suspected someone was still in the room with Eiji's lifeless body, preventing the door from opening all the way. And who knew? He was right!

So we've seen how manipulative and observant he can be. Does the man actually have a heart, or is he completely cold? He very much does have a heart and cares about those around him :). While locking Eiji in the room in the beginning was seen as heartless by the girls (and possibly Yuu), Hajime was also looking out for his well-being, thinking that if he was locked in a room, the wolf would not be able to get to him. One more life saved! Or not...anyways! Back to the thumb tack example; Yuu is convinced that he's responsible for the man's death (since the tack would only puncture the skin upon removal of the mask) and freaks out. Hajime calmly tells him that it could have been anybody's 'fault' for the man's death, even the man himself if he would have tried removing it. Sounding like a big brother? Yes, indeed. Also, he shows sympathy toward Mistuki at the end while he and Yuu are conversing outside her hospital room. He explains that after everything that has happened and the probable sentence she'd be receiving for being convicted of the murders, he believes Mitsuki would be better off if she never woke from her coma. After everything is said and done at the hospital, Hajime realizes Yuu really cares for Mitsuki, and he decides to go back to the scene (facility) himself to search for evidence to clear her name. See? Hajime does indeed have a soul.

Abilites/Special Powers: Hajime has no abilities or special powers. Woo!

Third-Person Sample: “Now be a good boy.” Hajime turned away from the bound Yuu on the floor and walked out of the surveillance room.

Of course Yuu was a prime suspect in being the wolf. Haruka had confronted him about not having a barcode, and it seems the girl was right. Nowhere on Yuu’s stomach was that familiar tattoo. A single lie in this game was one lie too many, and Hajime knew that as a detective he needed to do all he could to flesh out the ‘wolf’ from among the ‘rabbits’. Too many murders had been committed by this killer as of late, so he went undercover in hopes of putting this crazed psychopath behind bars.

He continued down the hall on the second floor and stopped in front of one of the rooms he and the others had explored earlier. However, what he saw in front of him on the ground when he opened the door was not something he was expecting. Yes, he did suspect that Yuu was the wolf, but he also thought the same of Haruka. But now, here she was…lying on the ground, lifeless and without a head. “If you’re not the wolf…then…,” he trailed off, the cogs in his mind now turning. Haruka’s not the wolf. Yuu may be the wolf. But what about Eiji and Mitsuki? There were still too many possibilities for his liking, and Hajime knew he was starting to run out of time in finding out who the real wolf was.

Then it occurred to him. The wolf would more than likely return to this room at some point to check on the body. After picking her up, one arm supporting her shoulders and the other under her knees, he peeked around the doorframe and looked down both sides of the corridor before exiting.

Trying to remain as quiet as possible, he made his way down the corridor and into the large room he, Yuu, and Mitsuki woke up in. He set the body down and went back to the previous room, returning with some rope. Hajime also believed that if his suspicions were right, Yuu would confess in seeing Haruka's body on the screen, thinking it was Mitsuki's. He bundled the rope and held on to one end, throwing it over one of the ceiling beams. He proceeded to loop the other end of the rope under the arms and across the chest of Haruka's headless body. He grabbed the other end and hoisted the body up until the neck and shoulders reached the beam. He looked around for something to tie off the end, and his eyes landed on the grate in the floor.

After tying the rope to the grate, he walked over to the door and paused, looking back at the body. “Who is the wolf?”

First-Person Sample: What…Where am I…? [The young detective looks around and finds himself in a room he has never been in or seen before. Could this possibly be another room in the medical facility? Or was he once again drugged by the wolf and transported to a different location?

He walks over to the desk and picks up what looks to be a communication device of some sort, his dark eyes looking down through circular lenses at the screen.] Odd…why would the wolf leave such a thing lying around? Is this still all part of the game?
