So I'm not exactly known to be the most compassion person around and I'm not about to bring the tissue box each time I watch the news. HOWEVER, I understand that as members of society there is a certain amount of sympathy, or at least reverence that is required in the wake of terrible events. Therefore, I would like to pose that satirical comments ( Read more... )

Here here!
What happened in Virginia could happen anywhere- I doubt that people would make light of these deaths if they had happened closer to home.
People should stop bitching about the "unfairness" of honorary degrees! What about the unfairness of an untimely death?

I didn't say it was unfair I was curious what was the motivation behind them. I didn't understand it. I don't know what it would do for my parents if the same had happened for.

It wasn't you're post that I was really making reference to- it was in response to Patti's comment. From later comments I have come to understand that she doesn't believe that a degree isn't the best way to honor their lives, but the first comment was pretty self centered nonetheless.

I am really not claiming that any one tragedy is more important than another, but that they should be taken seriously. Only 60 years later is Hitler a 'funny man' (this is in regards to a Macleans article a couple months back). There is a certain amount of respect that these people deserve and it shouldn't be made so light of. That is all I really wanted to get across. And I think that a certain amount of self-centeredness is required before we can express sympathy with any amount of sincerity.

A) Nothing is required of us? Perhaps there is nothing that we specifically need to ‘do’ but there are things that we shouldn’t do. Particularly we should respect those lost and not subject them to our attempts at hilarity. Those lost in Iraq are equally valuable even if there is no media hype. I don’t believe that those lost, regardless of the situation, deserve sarcastic remarks. I only really saw those sort of comments in response to Virginia Tech and not to Iraq, so maybe the funny ones should check which is more important ( ... )

yea i kinda agree with vanessa that if you're going to question the media and challenge the norms, the humor should be based on that, not the victims/murderer. you end up offending people who, in turn, will get defensive and close their mind. they are not able to grasp the different take on things. if you wanted to make a change, i don't think this kind of humor is the best way to go about it. i guess it would be up to those who want the change to come up with a better approach.
