Part 3.5:

A/N Mark Two: Ended up being paced as I wanted it after all! In light of the episode coming up (which I, incidentally, won't have till tomorrow but nontheless I'll probably be reading all the spoilers I can lay my hands on) I wanted there to be the ending I'd thought of a very long time ago. Here it is. Hope you like it.

Part 3. 5
And When I Am Old

Its only a few hundred years, a few hundred planets, a few million lives, a few billion moments later.

This time-

Blue eyes, like the ones she first fell in love with, and a smile to rival any ever seen.

Green eyes, not at all like the ones he first fell for, so long ago, but the spirit lighting them is close to identical, changed only by time.

“Well.”

“Well.”

“Thank you.” A sharp grin. “For your time.”

“Oh. Yes.” Shared. “Stories for your grandchildren-”

“Oh, I imagine they’ll be someone else’s grandchildren by now.”

“I see.” They look at the ground. “Was there no one- along the way?”

They both know the answer.

“There was this one- this one companion of mine I traveled with for a bit- hard act to follow though, you see.”

Another shared smile. They’ve learned what this means, over the years and a hundred false tries. But that was just practice. This was real. This was the last.

“And you’ll come by and check, on your last-”

“I will,” is the promise, as truly as she knows how.

“I’ll do my best to still be around.”

She kisses him then, on the cheek, lingers, breathes him in, and he gathers her in for one last hug before the final goodbye.

“Don’t forget me.”

“Nor you me, Rose Tyler.”

“I won’t, Doctor. I couldn’t.” She slips away from him then, slips through his fingers, moves away, and returns to the ship for an untold number of unlived adventures. And he is left behind.

He doesn’t mind.

Off in the distance, at the end of the road, is the perfect kind of little retirement community. He narrows his eyes in that direction and snorts. They’ll find somewhere else. Even now, they won’t ever fit in with retirees. Too antsy. Too falsely young. Too alive.

There was all that ahead, anyhow. Briefly feeling his age- must be staggering, by now- he decides to sit down and wait for her. She could be back anytime, really, a matter of seconds or years or lifetimes.

If there was one thing he had, it was time.
