Author: juliejordan
Rating: R
Spoilers: Through to and including "Doomsday"
Summary: The Tenth Doctor and Rose find themselves in a Wild West town in 1800s California where young women are being turned into monsters and a cataclysmic event threatens the security of the entire planet. Can they put things right again before it's too late?
Author Notes: This story was written for the wendymr's and dark_aegis Rose Tyler Ficathon. I wrote this fic for grace61, who wanted any Doctor including Nine or Ten, romance but within a plot and no heavy angst. Special thanks to brienze for being such an incredible beta reader. This is a Ten/Rose tale set in a slightly AU where Rose remains with the Doctor in her own world after events of the episode "Doomsday", and contains some graphic scenes of a sexual nature.
Warnings: This chapter contains sexual scenes of an adult nature.

Chapter One: One Day Out West
Chapter Two: Story Time
Chapter Three: The Hunting Party

They hadn’t been able to get a look at the vampires while lurking in the tunnel, so the Doctor devised a plan. He wasn’t happy about it. It was putting Rose directly in the line of fire, but it would be the best way.

After returning to the Saloon to tell Frances what they’d found out so far, they again went back to the TARDIS. Wanting to try and find out why everything was happening HERE, the Doctor consulted the TARDIS computer, looking up the history of Blue River via the internet.

And he got quite a shock.

Blue River had not always been named Blue River. That had been it's original name, but during the 1870s, there had been a drough so bad, the tiny river the town had been named after had dried up, and in 1881, during a town meeting, residents had come up with the idea to change the town's name.

To Sunnydale.

That wasn't all the Doctor found out. Searching for history on Sunnydale, rather than Blue River, brought up a whole new load of information...and case after case of strange happenings. It was as though there was something, a source of some kind, that brought evil specifically to Sunnydale, and the Doctor rushed back to his mythology books. The theory that had formed in his mind was quickly prooved right.

Sunnydale, Blue River - whatever - was directly on top of a Hellmouth. Which explained the vampires, Frances' dreams, and all the other supernatural happenings that he'd found in reports on-line.

Hellmouth's actually existed.

Bollocks.

* * * *

Utterly certain now - after consulting his books a little more after the Hellmouth discovery - that these were real, actual vampires they were dealing with,
the Doctor quickly made some stakes using the legs of one of the tables in the TARDIS and handed one to Rose before giving her a crash course in learning how to use it.

“You’ve got to aim for the heart,” he instructed “Anywhere else and it won’t make a dent on them. Here, like this…”

With his own stake, he pretended to pierce Rose’s own heart, placing the tip just where her heart was.

“If they really are vampires, they can be killed that way, and hopefully you won't miss."

“Hopefully,” she murmured, unable to help feeling a little apprehensive.

“You’ll be fine,” he took her hand; making her lower her own stake so that she wouldn’t hurt him with it “I won’t let anything hurt you.”

Even as he spoke the words, he knew he couldn’t promise it. Not truly. Not promise it and necessarily keep it. He’d do everything in his power to keep her safe, like he’d told Jackie he would so long ago, but sometimes things just couldn’t be prevented. The risk was always there, with every outing, every mission…

She must’ve sensed his concern, because she quickly brightened.

“Hey, I’ll be all right. We’ve faced worse, right?”

God, he loved this woman. He wondered how he’d managed without her sometimes. He loved all of his companions, but it was a different kind of love that he felt for Rose. Something he’d not really experienced before in his so very long existence. And he was so very glad that he’d finally allowed himself to be true to her, to give into those aching desires he’d felt for her since they’d met.

After that terrifying day when she’d almost been sucked into the void, nearly lost forever in a parallel universe, the Doctor had decided it was time to wake up and stop mucking about. He’d come so close to losing her and the realisation had terrified him. Once they’d got back to the TARDIS, alone and safe, he’d finally tossed out the rules and kissed her desperately, as though it helped reassure him that she was really still with him.

She hadn’t protested.

The same night after they’d escaped the Torchwood headquarters, the same night he’d kissed her for the first time, Rose had offered herself to him. For a few moments, he’d successfully resisted. But then she’d taken her top off and practically forced herself on him, and he’d given up and thrown caution to the wind.

And really, things hadn’t changed all that much in the end. It was just like before, only with shagging. They were closer than ever, their bond even more unbreakable. Becoming closer had only strengthened both of them.

He pulled her closer and kissed her. The stake she held slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor and she put her arms around his neck, pressing herself up against him. He felt her hand trail down his left side and cheekily give his arse a squeeze…rarely had he been more turned on and couldn’t resist giving her beautiful behind a light slap in return. She laughed and in response, unzipped his trousers, daring him to let take it one step further.

“We got time for this?” she asked, pausing briefly.

There were a few hours until sun down. Plenty of time, though they wouldn’t be able to take too long about it. With that in mind, he helped Rose out of her dress, struggling momentarily with all the buttons before pulling it down. She stepped out of it and carelessly tossed it aside and went to get the corset off, but he stopped her.

“Leave it,” he told her, his brown eyes sparkling.

“Turns you on, does it?” she smirked, standing back for a moment so that he could admire her in just her corset and stockings.

“Like hell,” he admitted, and seconds later, he was on his back on the floor as Rose straddled him, lowering herself onto his already erect penis. His hands reached up for her breasts and he caressed them, gently at first. He played with her nipples, pinching them, making her moan as his delicate fingers touched her as she started to ride him, slowly building up a pace.

The Doctor savoured every moment of their rushed, passionate love making, not wanting it to end, yet knowing it had to all too soon, as they quickly found a rhythm and loud moans of pleasure echoed around the library.

“Did you find it? Did you find the information?” asked Frances as the time travellers returned to the Saloon.

“Well you know that our little excursion to their lair wasn’t as helpful as we’d hoped…but we’re fairly confident that these,” the Doctor pulled two stakes from his trouser pocket and handed one to Frances “will be needed.”

“You’re going to fight them?” guessed Frances.

“Want to come?” offered the Doctor, knowing that it could only help Frances if she faced what was happening head on. Maybe it was too late to save her from the curse of the vampires, but if she could help others, it might be a way for her to come to terms with her own status. That, and you could never have too many people on your side. Who knew how many of these creatures were around? He and Rose probably wouldn’t be enough to stop them just on their own. Ideally, they could use the whole town, and the Doctor planned to try and entice a few more people to join the hunt later, but he knew he wasn’t going to have much luck. Not when they’d rather play ostriches and bury their heads in the sand like nothing was going on even when it was their daughters, sisters, nieces, cousins, and friends who had suffered at the hands of the demons.

“Me?” Frances looked both horrified and awed at the very idea, though the awe quickly turned to scepticism. “What could I possibly do? I’m…I’m nobody. I have no power. I can’t -”

“I think you could do a lot of things if you started believing in yourself a bit,” said the Doctor “And as for nobodies…Take Rose here.”

“Watch it, you!” she protested, giving him an offended glare.

“Know what she was when I met her? A shop girl. An ordinary, every day shop girl. She lived with her mum and got her thrills from drinking with her mates in her local while her boyfriend watched the footie and forgot she was even there. Then she met me. And now she’s saved the Earth, the universe even, and more than once, too. She’s travelled to the year five billion, seen worlds other than this one…she’s faced evil head on and lived to tell the tale. If Rose can handle all that, I’d gamble anything that you can, too.”

“Come with us,” urged Rose “It could really make a difference. Safety in numbers and all that, right, Doctor?”

Frances pondered the invitation for several moments, before speaking again. She hadn’t understood half of what the Doctor had said…words like ‘footie’ and ‘mates’ unknown to her, but she got the gist of it enough to piece together what he was saying.

“I never achieved anything noteworthy in my life. Perhaps I can make up for that in death,” she smiled weakly and stretched out her hand, taking the stake from the Doctor.

“Good girl,” he approved, giving her hand a pat.

“What about your sister?” inquired Rose “I don’t suppose -”

“She won’t come,” replied Frances with certainty “But I’ll make sure she’s safe. We can lock up the saloon securely before we leave and hope that’s enough.”

The very idea of disobeying her elder sister filled Frances with nerves, but she knew it had to be done.

For the good of the world she told herself firmly, knowing she must not let her own insecurities ruin their mission to stop the creatures. Margaret would be angry, but Frances had faith that John Smith would help her sibling to understand later.

“What’s your plan?” asked Frances.

“They need two more girls, yeah? Well the Doctor thought that we could patrol and, if they come out tonight to try and take someone else, we’ll be there to stop them,” Rose explained.

“What if we don’t succeed? The ritual can’t be performed, if it does…”

“Not succeed? Us?” the Doctor looked mock offended, but soon turned serious “Like you say, we have to stop them.”

Frances wasn’t convinced, but they had to try. To sit and do nothing was worse than not trying at all.

“So we leave at sundown?” she checked, glancing over to the window. The sky had already turned shades of golds and oranges. Soon it would be night, and they would appear.

“Sundown,” confirmed the Doctor.

She looked down at the stake in her hands, trying to come to terms with what she had to do as they waited those last few minutes as dusk slowly swept over the little town.

* * * *
“Let me out! So help me, when I get free -”

The Doctor ignored Margaret’s words of anger and her bangs on the cellar door as he locked it and turned to Rose and Frances.

“That’s the tricky bit taken care of. Now to wait for the vampires,” said the Doctor, handing back the bunch of keys to Frances.

Stake gripped firmly in hand, the Doctor led the women around the side of the saloon. They hovered at the edge of the main street, peering out into the dark.

“Of course, after eleven girls going missing, I can’t imagine anyone would be stupid enough to go out after sunset,” mused the Doctor.

“No one wants to believe that evil lurks among us. Even the families of the missing girls. It’s almost like nothing’s happened at all,” sighed Frances.

Now that they were out in force, all they could do was wait for the vampires to show themselves, and who knew when that could be.

“This vigilante thing isn’t half as exciting as those superhero movies make it out to be,” said Rose sometime later. A considerable amount of time had passed and still nothing.

They’d done a walk of the whole town and were back to where they’d started; the saloon.

“The one night someone is prepared and they don’t -” Frances began to mutter irritably, but the Doctor heard something else and made her be quiet.

Listening hard, he could just make out the sound of someone giggling. A girl’s voice sliced through the night.

“Oh, Billy, if my father ever heard of the things you said to me -”

“Know her?” the Doctor asked Frances.

She shook her head.

“I don’t recognise the voice.”

The Doctor watched as the girl and her male escort came into sight. She was young. Eighteen at the most. The boy, who seemed a bit older, spoke into her ear and she laughed loudly again. Then, as if sensing danger, she quietened and quickened her pace.

“Move,” the Doctor instructed, and they left their hiding place and followed the couple, walking a few paces behind them.

They approached the girl. Rose got close enough to put her hand on the girl’s shoulder.

“Hey. It’s alright, we’re not gonna hurt you…but you’re in danger. You shouldn’t be out here,” Rose told her.

The other girl gave an amused laugh. “Why ever not? All seems fine to me. Anyway, I’ve got -”

There was a startled cry from the man at her side. The Doctor watched, shocked, as he was grabbed by two figures and pulled back.

The vampires.

Talk about quick! The Doctor hadn’t even seen that coming, and he’d been right next to the girl.

“Billy!” the girl screamed.

The Doctor raised his stake and took a step closer to the vampires. The demons held their captive firmly. One of them prepared to bite him, but paused at the sight of the Doctor.

“Let him go,” the Doctor ordered, clutching the stake ever tighter.

“Why would we do that?” sneered one of the vampires.

“Because you only need females for your ritual,” at the vampire’s look of surprise, the Doctor continued “Oh, yes. I know all about your little plan. You’re trying to summon Gheab so that you and all your other evil little friends can have full control of the world. Except you still need two more virgins…well you’re not getting this girl.”

“Really?” the vampire looked more intrigued by the Doctor than intimidated.

The creature grinned devilishly before clapping his hands together loudly. The Doctor watched as several more figures emerged from the shadows, all vampires, all out for blood. Now at least a dozen of them gathered in the main street. The Doctor hadn’t expected this to be easy, but he hadn’t planned on being ambushed so soon.

“Rose?” he glanced over to her.

“Yeah?” her voice shook slightly.

“Get ready for anything.”

* * * *
It happened faster than she’d anticipated.

Stakes met vampire hearts and people turned to dust right before her eyes. She didn’t know how many she killed.

She tried to see if the Doctor was okay, but too many surrounded her. She staked another one, and was about to go again when she felt her arm being grabbed.

One of them held her. They took her stake and flung it away. She heard it falling to the ground somewhere close by.

“It’s unfortunate that you’re too impure to be used in the ritual, but you’ll make a nice meal,” another one leered at her as she was held. She tried to struggle but her captor’s grip was too tight.

“Doctor!” she yelled out. It was all she could do.

“Sorry, Rose! Bit busy right now!” he called back, and she could see him dealing with four vampires of his own. The girl and her date were nowhere in sight. They’d probably taken the opportunity to run.

“Unhand her!”

It was Frances who came to her rescue. She seemed transformed from the meek girl who they knew as she stood confidently wielding her stake.

“I won’t ask you again,” said Frances.

“Traitor,” spat one of the vampires “You are one of us. Yet you kill your own kind. Why?”

“I will never be like you!” growled Frances angrily “I wear your face but there is still good in me. And there always will be, if I have any say in the matter!”

Suddenly Frances lunged at the vampires, letting out a scream of rage as she aimed for the heart of the one that held Rose. Rose saw her coming and ducked in time, stopping herself from being accidentally impaled.

“Are you alright, miss?” asked Frances.

“Yeah. Remind me never to piss you off!” smiled Rose as she picked up her stake from where it had fallen.

“We need to help the Doctor!” stated Frances, and the two tore over to the man in the trench coat.

“Rose, Frances! So glad you made it. I think our friends were getting bored of just me,” the Doctor said, just as he staked another creature.

There appeared to only be three left. To Rose’s amazement, they’d taken out most of the gang, though it seemed the Doctor had done most of the work. He fought in hand to hand combat, blocking their punches and judo-style throw attempts before getting in a good enough position to be able to put the stake through their hearts.

As Rose went to help him, Frances let out a startled cry. Rose turned back, and saw that five new vampires had arrived on the scene. Jesus, how many of these things were there?

“Frances!” Rose shouted as she saw her friend being dragged away by the new arrivals.

The blonde went to go after them, but had barely taken a step when she felt something hard come down on her head.

She distantly heard the sound of laughter and the Doctor fearfully shouting her name as she collapsed and fell into a dreamless slumber.

(To be concluded...)

Author Notes: I realise I am taking serious creative liberties with the history of Sunnydale so I think I may have to slap an AU label on this fic. It's AU anyway, so hopefully messing up Buffy history ever so slightly by having Sunnydale previously called something else as well won't hurt too much!
