I'm intrigued with the idea of freecycle, but I confess I have a bit of stranger danger fear. How did you go about meeting her? Did you correspond for a bit before you went to her house?
I guess that's what I get for growing up on the south side of chicago ;)

Many people do "porch pickup." so I don't get to see them.
I usually take my dog Soap with me, too. He's friendly enough that he's not a liability (like the little black psycho), but he also is very protective. This woman happened to be someone I had met before through horses, and she lived right next to the park that we sometimes went to.
I think down south, we might tend to be a little more open to talking to strangers - perhaps it's a bit of a cultural thing. For instance, when I went to Boston for work, I was amazed at my coworkers who looked at me strangely when all I asked was, "Hey, how's it going?"
