"I want to tell the story this time!"
Cobb sighed, pulling up his daughters comforter and tucking her in. "Baby, I'm not the one that needs to go to sleep. Defeats the point a little, doesn't it?"
Phillipa pouted, eyes huge. "Please? I have a really good one! I've been practising!"
Cobb sighed again, rolling his eyes. He couldn't say no and she knew it. "Fine, you tell the story."
When Phillipa smiled, though, a huge and bright grin, it seemed to be worth what would inevitably be tears in the morning.
Shifting a little to find a comfortable niche, his daughter launched into the story, with a voice that held a promise of length and epicness. Cobb mentally kicked himself; make that tears and screaming.
"Once upon a time," she began, "there was a handsome prince. In all the land you couldn't have found a kinder, more loving prince. He had everything; a huge castle; a beautiful wife, the envy of all the lands; and two beautiful children, who he loved very much; and a best friend, a knight, who protected him from all kinds of harm.
"But one day, everything can crumbling down for the prince. His wife left for a visit to a far away kingdom, only to return possessed by an evil witch." His Phillipa's voice was sad, and Cobb stroked her cheek wishing he could have protected her from what happened to Mal. "The king tried and tried to save her but to success, until one day his wife was gone, never to be seen again. Next, his children were taken--kidnapped!--by an evil dragon, who didn't let them speak to the prince and fed them oatmeal cookies."
Phillipa paused for a moment to pull a disgusted face, and Cobb rolled his eyes at her with a small smile. It wasn't hard to put a name to the "prince" in his daughter's story, let alone the children or the wife. The best friend, however, he wasn't sure. Araidne had made quite the impression on his children, though it could have been anyone.
He pushed a errant strand of hair behind her ear. "And what about the best friend, sweetheart? Did our prince lose her too?"
"I'm telling the story dad, and I'll have you know the best friend is a him," she said with an air of huffiness Dom just had to chuckle at. "Anyway, then the prince was exiled from his kingdom and sent to a far away land. But so sad from the loss of his wife and children, the prince couldn't stay put; he travelled far and wide, visiting exotic lands but never finding a true home. He met loads of new people; a girl with the ability to create things with the power of her mind; a wizard who was a potions master! Even a thief, who could charm anyone. But the best friend--no, he couldn't leave the prince. They were best friends, you see, and he was the prince's knight; so, he followed. He always followed." He could hear the tiredness creeping into his daughters voice and, as childish as it seemed, he willed her to stay awake for the final part of the story.
Phillipa yawned but continued, eyes fluttering. "He loved his prince, and the prince love him. They knew the prince's wife was gone, hidden away by some evil thing, but his children could be saved. They plotted and planned with the prince's new friends until one day, they decided they were strong and able to take on the dragon. The prince slayed the dragon with the help of his best friend, who even got his favourite suit burned." Phillipa nodded, apparently convinced this was a great sacrifice.
Cobb's eyebrows shot up. "The best friend wears a suit? When battling a dragon?"
Phillipa smiled sleepily. "Oh yes. Always wears suits."
Arthur, he realised. She was talking about Arthur.
"And then what, pumpkin?" Cobb couldn't help himself--he needed to know how it ended.
"When the children returned, the prince was finally able to return home. The kingdom rejoiced, being finally rid of the dragon. The others--the girl, the wizard, the thief--they all left the prince, though they visited sometimes. But the best friend stayed, like always. They built a life together, stayed together and finally they realised what they had was special. They had found what they were looking for."
Cobb's voice was soft. "And what was that?"
Phillipa smiled another sleepy smile, her eyes fighting to stay open. "They found what you and Mummy had, Daddy. They found love."
Cobb's heart flipped in his chest and he pressed a kiss to his daughters forehead, a tiny impression of the love he held. "Goodnight, Phillipa."
Her smile lingered as she slipped into her dreams. "Goodnight, prince."
When he finally made his way downstairs, he found Arthur lounging on the sofa, a glass of red wine hanging from his fingertips. He was quite a sight, gel-slicked hair slightly mused from the day, tie loosened and jacket and shoes long abandoned. Cobb smiled unconsciously, fingers reaching for his totem as he was want to do on occasions like this--where he couldn't believe his luck, where he couldn't believe everything went from being so shit to something akin to normal.
Cobb slipped on the end of the sofa, lifting Arthur's feet onto his thighs, an began rubbing the arches. Arthur let out a noise of contentment, his eyes closing in pleasure. "How did James' story go?"
Arthur didn't open his eyes but replied, "Fine. He was asleep by the second page."
Cobb's fingers found what seemed to be a pressure point by the way Arthur moaned quietly, and worked the knot relentlessly. "Thank you."
Finally opening his eyes, Arthur took a sip of the wine before setting it down on the coffee table. "No worries. Not as if I was going anywhere."
Cobb's voice was playful. "Oh weren't you?"
Arthur arched an eyebrow and tugged away his feet as Cobb struggled to keep them still. "Do you want me to go?"
Cobb gave up with a chuckle but compensated by climbing on top of Arthur, caging him against the side of the sofa. Arthur let a small smile tug his lips, eyes fluttering closed in anticipation.
"No," Cobb laughed, pressing a kiss to his eyelids. "You're my knight. You're not going anywhere."
