I've had that same problem before and it's quite easy to fix. If you're on a windows computer just go to My Pictures and up at the top there's a 'tools' option by the 'help' option. Click that and select 'folder options'. Then go to the type of file you want. (they're in alphabetical order so you can go down the list changing your image files.) Click "change" and select 'paint'. The file should then open as a windows file rather than a gimp one. ;) I hope that helped.
