Summary: Jensen and Jared drop Icarus off to be fixed.
Disclaimer: I’m just an obsessed fangirl. That is all.
Author's Notes: I couldn’t watch
this video and not write some fic about J2 and Icarus. I’ll probably write more little snippets about them, because it’s just too cute.
“You have to do it, Jensen.”
Jensen glared at Jared, even though he knew Jared was right. They’d already been through all the benefits of having it done. It was the right thing to do. But that didn’t make the decision any easier. He sighed when he felt Jared pat his shoulder in sympathy.
“I just feel so bad,” Jensen said quietly, hugging the bundle in his arms.
“I know.” Jared gave him a bit of a smile and nodded. “It’s something us guys have trouble dealing with. But, trust me, it’s for the better.” Jensen hesitated, sighing again and feeling a pang in his heart when he chanced a look down.
“Oh, God, look at him. It’s like he already knows.”
Icarus stared up at him with wide brown eyes, floppy little ears flattened back against his head, and tiny little tail hidden beneath his body. He was soft and warm in Jensen’s arms and shaking slightly.
“I can’t do it, Jay,” Jensen said suddenly, turning to Jared and fidgeting, as if he were about to bolt from the veterinarian’s office. “I mean, look at him. He’s a Cockapoo, for Christ’s sake! He’s already the least masculine dog there is, all tiny and fluffy and white and, and…part poodle! And then I’m just gonna hand him over and let them take his balls away from him? I may as well just put him to sleep! At least then he’d be out of his misery!”
“Don’t talk like that!” Jared hissed, shoving Jensen back in his seat with one hand. Jensen swore he saw him cover Icarus’ ears with the other. “He’ll be fine, Jensen. I know it’s hard…”
“Oh, yeah, not after his balls are gone,” Jensen scoffed, Jared ignoring him and moving right along.
“…But it’s just something you have to do. It’s healthier for him in the long run, and you’ll have fewer problems with him behaviorally-”
“I know,” Jensen groaned, rolling his eyes. “Jared, you’ve given me this speech like a thousand times already.”
“So what’s the problem?” Jared asked, exasperated. “Harley and Sadie are fixed!”
“Yeah, and they’re both like 100 pounds!” Jensen lifted Icarus in his hands, facing him towards Jared. “This little guy’s only 15 pounds! Look at him! He doesn’t get much bigger than this! You cut off his balls, and that’s 5 pounds less right there! I already didn’t want a freakin’ Cockapoo…”
“Jensen!” Jared scolded, staring in horror at Icarus, as if he could understand every word Jensen was saying.
“…And now that I’m stuck with one, I definitely don’t want one without any freakin’ balls!” Jensen continued, just barely aware of how much his voice had risen. “I may as well change my name to Jennifer and buy a nice little handbag to carry him around in!”
“Having second thoughts?”
Jensen paused, still facing Jared, the room suddenly falling silent. He could feel color rising to his cheeks, and he caught a slight twitch in Jared’s expression, the bastard already fighting off a grin. When Jensen finally looked up from his seat, he saw the veterinarian hovering over him, an amused and knowing smile playing over her lips. Without even realizing it, Jensen hugged Icarus tight to his body.
“Um…well, I,” Jensen stuttered, unsure of what to say. The veterinarian tilted her head and narrowed her eyes playfully.
“Do I have to give you the ‘He won’t be any less of a man’ speech?”
Jared snorted and Jensen blushed. He sat staring at her for a moment before looking down at Icarus, the little dog wagging his tail and popping up to lick the tip of Jensen’s nose. Jensen scratched Icarus behind the ears, delaying his decision for a bit longer. He often complained about the dog he’d received as a surprise from Danneel, who’d offered to take Icarus herself if things didn’t work out. But Jensen couldn’t deny that the thing he’d once mistaken for a throw pillow had somehow wormed its way into his heart.
“Sorry, little guy,” he said under his breath as he finally stood up, handing him over to the veterinarian. He knew what he had to do. “No speech necessary. He’s ready.”
“Icarus, right?” She asked, smiling at the dog she now held in her hands. Jensen nodded. “We’ll take good care of him. You can come back to pick him up this afternoon.”
“Thanks.”
He watched her carry Icarus away, the dog’s head popping up over her shoulder to look back at him. He was only aware that Jared had stood as well when he felt Jared’s arm wrap around his shoulders. He leaned into the touch, thankful that the place was almost empty, aside from the staff, and that no one would really notice.
“Look at you, defending his honor,” Jared teased. “You fuckin’ love him.”
“Shut up,” Jensen laughed, elbowing Jared away and heading for the door. He unlocked Jared’s car, immediately hopping into the driver’s seat. “Let’s go to the pet store. I wanna get the little bastard some treats for later, so maybe he’ll forgive me.”
“Jensen Ackles,” Jared said, moving around to the passenger’s side of the car and getting in, “You are a big damn softy.”
