Author's Notes: At first I didn't like how this turned out. But now I'm posting it anyway. Oh, and it's based on the beginning of this video.

“You’re such a girl, dude.”

“You’re the one cooking,” Jared snaps, reaching for the cutting board to snag a few pieces of what Jensen’s chopping. Jensen smacks his hand away without even glancing at him, and Jared pouts. “Want me to get you an apron, Mrs. Ackles?”

Jensen glances at him then, a glare before he raises an eyebrow and the corner of his mouth starts to turn up in a smile, and Jared can’t help but smile back. Jensen picks up a small piece of chopped celery and tosses it in Jared’s face. It bounces off of his nose and drops onto the kitchen floor, and Harley’s on it immediately, licking the floor even after the morsel is gone, as if more of it will magically appear somehow.

“You really wanna know?” Jensen asks, getting back to preparing dinner. Jared nods, even though Jensen isn’t really looking at him.

“Yeah, I wanna know.”

“I guess, ‘the first time we met’ is too cliché, huh?” Jensen asks, and Jared nudges him with an elbow. Jensen rolls his eyes and dumps the chopped items into the pot he’s got on the stove. “Fine. I’ll give you a real answer.” He turns away from the stove and steps back to lean against the counter, facing Jared. “It was when Sam died.” Jared sobers up then, his eyes going wide.

“Jesus, Jen. That long?”

“Yeah.” Jensen just nods, as if it isn’t a big deal. But then, Jared guesses it isn’t really anymore. “It made me realize you meant more to me than, uh…” Jensen looks away and clears his throat a little bit, “than I thought.”

Jared stands there for a minute, unsure of what to do. He stares at Jensen, wondering how he could’ve been so damn oblivious. But then Jensen’s looking back at him, smiling again, as if he didn’t just reveal how long he’d been pining for him.

“What about you?” Jensen asks, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back further. “When did you know you wanted to be more than friends?”

It takes Jared a minute to answer, because he feels like a bit of a jackass now, but then he thinks about it, and he can’t hold back his smile. He reaches for the phone in his pocket and presses a few buttons before handing it over to Jensen, the perfect image on the screen.

He remembers that night so clearly. Well, he remembers that moment so clearly, at least. The night had been spent laughing and drinking with a friend, and they’d stayed up far too late for work standards. Jared had stumbled up to his room at some ridiculous hour of the morning, not too bothered by the dogs staying downstairs. They tended to do that when company was over. He’d collapsed into bed, not even bothering to get undressed, and he was halfway to sleep when his phone rang in his pocket. He whined, wanting to ignore it, but decided to check it out, just in case. He was always worried about missing an emergency call.

What he found was an email, a picture popping up in seconds, and there was Jensen, passed out in his bedroom downstairs. He was flat on his back, mouth hanging slightly open, dead to the world. And there, curled up on either side of him, were Sadie and Harley, cuddling up close. Harley had his nose nudged under Jensen’s arm, and Sadie was all nuzzled into his neck, paw slung over his body.

There was something in that picture, in that moment. What struck Jared was that he wasn’t jealous. He wasn’t annoyed that his dogs weren’t showering him with affection, even if they weren’t supposed to be on the bed to begin with. He was happy. He was happy that his dogs were just as comfortable with Jensen living with them as he was, and a warmth that he’d never felt before spread throughout his chest, all thoughts of sleep forgotten. Part of him wanted to get up out of bed and go downstairs, to that bedroom, to Jensen. Instead, he saved the picture and his thoughts for the next day, mindful of their friend downstairs.

“There,” Jared says. Jensen stares at the picture on the phone’s screen, and his expression goes soft. “That’s when I knew. Probably would’ve come downstairs and molested you in your sleep if we didn’t have company over.”

“Yeah?” Jensen smirks and hands the phone back. “So you realized you loved me when I was buzzed, passed out, and covered in three different kinds of drool?”

“Hey, if that doesn’t mean we’re perfect for each other, than what does?” Jared replies, laughing, and Jensen shoves him playfully.

“Go sit down, Mr. Padalecki. Your dinner will be ready shortly.”
