Jared wakes up when his phone rings, rolling over and blindly grabbing for it. He cracks an eye open to look at it, groaning at how bright the backlighting is. When he sees Jensen’s name, he feels a little more awake, and he smiles, answering and putting the phone to his ear.
“Hey,” he says, voice gruff with sleep. “Was wonderin’ when you’d call.”
“Hey, I’m sorry to wake you,” Jensen answers, and Jared frowns at the note of apology already in Jensen’s voice.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“Nothing, nothing,” Jensen says quickly. “I just got the script for my episode.”
“Yeah?” Jared sits up a little, excited. “What’s it like? You like it?”
“Yeah, yeah, it’s good, really good.” There’s a hesitation on the line, and Jared knows what it means.
“But?”
“Listen, Jared, I swear I didn’t ask them to do this, but you’re actually not in it a whole lot.”
“Oh.” Jared pauses, his excitement waning. He can’t deny that he’s disappointed. He’d really wanted to be a part of this with Jensen. “Well, I know you’re not in it much, right?”
“Right,” Jensen confirms. “It’s kind of more about Bobby than anybody.”
Jared takes a minute to process everything. And then he starts to smile. “You thought I was gonna be mad at you because I wasn’t in it much?”
“You were excited,” Jensen says, and it’s that defensive tone that he uses when he knows Jared’s onto him. Jared grins. “From the minute I told you, you wouldn’t shut up about it, and then I got the script, and you were barely there. I just figured you should know.”
“You just figured I should know that it wasn’t you,” Jared corrects, and Jensen grunts a response. “You’re so cute.”
“Shut up,” Jensen groans, and Jared knows that Jensen’s rolling his eyes. “Anyway, you should be thanking me. Since you aren’t in it a whole lot, I worked it out so that we’re filming your scenes last. Enjoy your extended summer.”
“Really?” Jared’s touched and a little incredulous. He hasn’t had this long of a summer since the show started.
“Really,” Jensen says, and there’s a touch of warmth in his voice that Jared always loves to hear. “Just chill out and get some extra sleep, okay? Then you can come here all refreshed and energized after I’ve already been workin’ my ass off.”
“Thank you.” He’s sincere when he says it, and he almost feels bad. But this wouldn’t be the first time that Jensen has helped him, catered to him, rescheduled things just to give him some more time to relax, even though Jensen works harder than anyone Jared’s ever known. He’s tried to decline before, but Jensen won’t have it. “I mean it. You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yeah, well, what kinda boyfriend would I be if I didn’t do things like that?”
Jensen says it nonchalantly, but Jared knows better. Jensen rarely, if ever, uses that word, and Jared grins at the sound of it. “You said-”
“I’m hanging up now.”
****
Jensen’s a little annoyed with the script, to be honest. Not because it’s poorly written or lacking anything…aside from Jared. The episode makes sense without seeing much of Sam, but Jensen can’t help but think that this was done to avoid conflict between the two of them. He knows it’s how people would normally think, especially since he and Jared aren’t just coworkers. They’re close. Jensen’s directing, so give Jared less screentime. Wouldn’t want to cause any tension on the set. As if that could happen. Maybe Jensen will have to direct Jared now, but it’s not as if Jared would ever take offense to it. It would never be weird between them. Jared was nothing but supportive and excited when Jensen told him about the opportunity. But he supposes it’s the move you make when you’re thinking about the business.
As it happens, Jared actually shows up early on the day he comes back. Jensen doesn’t even know he’s there until Jared’s already been through to see the rest of the cast and crew. He’s sitting in Jensen’s trailer, grinning widely as Jensen comes through the door.
“Jensen!” Jared bounces up and pulls Jensen in for a hug. Jensen squeezes him back, grateful for the pleasant surprise. Jared pulls away and holds Jensen at arm’s length, looking at him. “Check you out, spending the day in street clothes!”
“I’m a director,” Jensen says haughtily, holding his chin up. “I don’t have to go to wardrobe.”
“Fancy that,” Jared says, leaning in and kissing Jensen. “I already heard all about you, man, everyone says you’re amazing. A natural. Born to do this.”
Jensen rolls his eyes and shrugs Jared off, never taking compliments easily. “Come on.”
“What do you mean, ‘Come on’?” Jared punches him lightly in the arm. “I know you. You were a director before they even let you get behind that camera.” Jared straightens up a little, and his smile turns proud. Jensen catches the look in Jared’s eye and knows what the reason is, Jared reaching out to touch the viewfinder hanging around Jensen’s neck, lifting it in his fingers. “I knew it even back then. You use this?”
Jensen shrugs, trying to be nonchalant, but he can’t keep the smirk off his face. “That’s why you got it for me, right? You barely even knew me, and you busted this out for my birthday.”
Jared scoffs. “We worked together 24/7, and we were already best friends.” He grabs the viewfinder and pulls Jensen closer, careful not to damage it. “I can’t believe you’re using this thing,” he says quietly, forehead resting against Jensen’s.
“It works,” Jensen says simply.
“It works?” Jared repeats, laughing against him, and Jensen joins in, happy to hear that sound so close again. “I guess it has nothing to do with the fact that it was my first birthday gift to you, then, huh?”
Jensen grins. “Nothing whatsoever.”
Jared’s eyes flutter closed, head tilting to the side, and Jensen closes his eyes and accepts the kiss he knows is coming, parting his lips and meeting Jared’s tongue with his own, humming with approval at the taste he’s missed since they parted for the summer. He slips away when he needs to breathe, fingers playing in Jared’s hair.
“You’re an asshole,” Jared says, and Jensen laughs.
“You know it.”

Jared feels the difference in the air when he and Jensen appear on set. People even joke about it, asking Jensen how it feels to be able to control Jared, and asking Jared what kind of pranks he has up his sleeve now. But Jared surprises everybody by slowing down, taking it easy. He’s missed out on Jensen’s directing debut so far, and he wants to see it, experience it, and be a working part of it. He wants Jensen to be successful.
It’s not much different from any other day on set, really. It’s always been easy working with Jensen, and Jensen’s always been able to guide him on set and offer constructive criticism without causing any animosity between them. If there’s anything different about this, it’s that it’s even more fun with his best friend in charge. Every so often, he feels a strong swell of pride watching Jensen work. He’s always admired Jensen, and he’s happy to see the way Jensen impresses everyone else on set. He’s almost sad when it’s over, and joins in the standing ovation that Jensen gets from the rest of the cast and crew. They walk off set together, Jared buoyed by Jensen’s accomplished vibe.
“You were great,” Jared says, wrapping an arm around Jensen’s shoulders.
“So were you,” Jensen responds, elbowing Jared in the ribs. “No fake lines, no goofy faces, no farting. You feeling okay?”
Jared shrugs. “I just wanted it to be good for you.”
“That’s what she said.”
Jared snorts. “I mean it.”
“Thanks.” Jensen surprises Jared by wrapping an arm around his waist as they walk. “It was better with you there, you know.”
“I know.”
“Asshole.”
