Normally, Jensen would be nervous. Okay, Jensen is nervous. But not as much as he would be if this wasn’t the Padalecki residence; if it wasn’t Jared. But it’s Jared he’s asking for, even though he knows damn well that he’ll just take Jared, if he has to.
The Padaleckis have generally accepted him and his relationship with Jared. But it’s one thing to just be boyfriends. It’s another to be husbands. Fact is, this is a big damn deal. It would be easy to chicken out. But Jensen knows deep down that he wants this more than anything he ever has. He knew it when he and Jared spent the night apart recently, and he felt like he had gaping black hole in his life. He knew it when they were reunited, and his heart skipped a beat upon waking, seeing Jared lying in bed next to him. And to be completely honest? He wants to beat Jared to it. Jared’s always the one wearing his heart on his sleeve and making these grand gestures, Jensen sitting back and enjoying the fact that his feelings are a given. But this is too important. Jensen needs to be the one to propose, because he doesn’t want to just be the one saying yes. He wants to ask Jared to say yes to him.
There’s a ring in Jensen’s pocket, burning a hole in it while he sits at the Padalecki dinner table. He keeps calm. He is an actor, after all. But once the dishes are being cleared, he starts to fidget, eventually glancing over at Megan, who gives a subtle smile and nods.
“Hey, Jared,” Megan speaks up, pushing her chair back and standing. “Come with me for a second. I need to show you something.”
With Jared distracted and out of the room, the butterflies in Jensen’s stomach kick their wings up a notch, and he quietly clears his throat.
“Mr. and Mrs. Padalecki?” he asks, and it’s never seemed as much of a mouthful as it does now, when his mouth is running dry. He looks up at them both, at Jerry, who’s still seated at the head of the table, and Sherri, who pauses in the midst of collecting dishes. “Could I have a moment? There’s something I’d like to ask you.”
Sherri cocks her head and sits down. “Of course, Jensen,” she says, and Jensen detects a note of worry in her voice. He knows it’s because of his tone and manner, the way he so spoke to them so formally. He hopes that what he asks is something that both relieves her and makes her happy. “You can ask us anything.”
Jensen nods and licks his lips, his hands shaking a little, even as he folds them on the surface of the table. “I’m in love with Jared,” he says, the words slow and thick on his tongue. But he looks them both in the eye, conveying his true feelings in those glances. “I’m in love with your son. I have been for a long time now. So much so that I can’t even remember what my life was like without him. And if it’s alright with you…” He pauses, taking a deep breath. “I’d like to ask for Jared’s hand in marriage.”
Sherri’s eyes widen, her hand covering her mouth as they fill with tears, but Jensen can tell that they’re happy ones, and any weight he felt is lifted. Jerry seems equally touched, and he speaks before his wife can, her emotions overpowering her.
“I think I can speak for both of us when I say we’d love to welcome you to this family,” Jerry says, stretching and reaching out to place a hand on Jensen’s shoulder. “We know how much Jared loves you, and we know he’s in good hands.” He smiles, and his voice is quieter than usual, with the slightest waver running through it. “I’d be honored to call you my son-in-law.”
Jensen smiles shakily, nodding and putting his hand over Jerry’s. “Thank you.” He laughs when he’s suddenly caught off guard by Sherri hurrying around the table to bend over and hug him, kissing his cheek. “Thank you both.”
“When are you gonna do it?” Sherri asks, keeping her emotions in check.
Jensen looks towards the other room and sees Jared and Megan walking through it, on their way back to them. He stands and meets them halfway, and Megan steps aside when he nods to her.
“Jared.” Jensen takes Jared’s hand in his, smiling at the quizzical look on Jared’s face. “You know how much I love you.”
Jared’s head tilts, eyes squinting a bit as he becomes more confused and a little concerned. “What did you do?”
Jensen laughs. “Nothing,” he says, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the ring. “Except for this.” He watches the realization hit Jared as he bends down onto one knee in front of him, sees Jared’s mouth fall open into a small O. “Jared Tristan Padalecki…will you marry me?”
Jared stares at him for a moment, hand over his chest. Then he looks away, looks at his sister and his parents. “I…You’re serious,” he stutters quietly, peering down at Jensen again. “This is real?”
“Yes.” Jensen nods, his heart pounding as he looks up at Jared. “It’s real. I love you, and I want you to be my husband.” He shrugs a little and smiles. “And I can be yours.”
Jared starts nodding slowly. “Yes.” It’s almost a whisper, but Jensen’s heart leaps. “Yes, I’ll marry you.” Jared laughs then, shaking his head at himself. “What am I doing? Of course I’ll marry you, Jensen!”
It’s when Jared’s excitement finally shows through the shock and everyone else starts applauding that Jensen takes the opportunity to slide the ring onto Jared’s finger. A perfect fit.
