Chapter 3 Ianto kissed Lisa’s forehead and left her to get some sleep, returning to the en-suite leaving the door open so he could hear if she needed him.
He slowly peeled off his clothes. His suit was filthy and in tatters so he just dropped it onto the floor to be disposed of in the morning. Now that the adrenaline had all been burned up he was bone weary. Everywhere ached with deep exhaustion and now that he allowed himself to stop worrying about Lisa for a moment and concentrate on his own aches and pains he realised just how close a call he had had. There were light grazes on both his elbows and a deeper one on his right knee that he had no idea how he had sustained. His arms and shoulders ached from dragging Lisa out of the building and he had quite a deep cut on his right upper arm. As he looked at it, Ianto’s mind flashed back to the moment of helping Lisa out of the machine and he remembered feeling the sting as he walked into one of the blades.
Ianto shuddered, the movement drawing attention to the pain in his lower back. Not that he had forgotten about it of course, more that he was trying to ignore it. He didn’t really want to look but he manoeuvred himself so that he could see his back in the mirror. A large scorch mark stretched from his spine across to his right hip, an ugly red splash across his pale welsh skin. Ianto bit his lip and gingerly touched the offending mark. He remembered seeing the Cyberman just in time to turn and duck to avoid being caught in the crossfire as it attacked the Dalek. The bolt of lightning from the Cyberman’s weapon flashed past just centimetres away. Seconds later the Cyberman exploded and, thankfully, the Dalek continued on its path down the corridor unaware of him hiding mere feet away.
His initial inspection complete, Ianto supposed he could count himself lucky. Nothing was broken but he’d probably have a few nasty scars as reminders of the day - something he really didn’t want to think about right now.
He turned the shower on, setting the dial a little colder and the pressure a little less than he would normally have it. Stepping under the spray he set about quickly and efficiently cleaning himself, scrubbing with the wash cloth, dabbing gently at his injuries, making sure to remove any dirt and grit, before lathering his hair up with shampoo. The water revived him slightly and left him feeling a little more human. Ianto let out a sob as he realised what he just thought. His girlfriend laying in their bed had been just minutes away from no longer being human. Fighting back the bile rising once more in his throat Ianto reached up and turned off the shower. As soothing as the warm water was he had get a move on, he needed to finish up in the bathroom and go and check on Lisa.
Stepping out of the shower he quickly towelled himself dry then stuck his head around the bathroom door. Lisa still looked to be asleep. She tossed her head a bit and whimpered softly but as Ianto was about to rush to her she seemed to settle down. He quietly backed up into the en-suite and opened the medicine cabinet. He pulled down a packet of antiseptic wipes, a pack of steri-strips, a bottle of burn gel and some gauze dressings, micro-pore tape and bandages. He laid his supplies out on the back of the sink and sat down on the closed toilet lid to set to work.
Gritting his teeth he first cleaned the wound in his arm. It wasn’t as deep as he had first thought but it still needed closing with the steri-strips. When he had finished he covered it in gauze and wrapped a bandage around it to keep it clean. Next he cleaned the grazes on his elbows and knee with antiseptic, but decided they didn’t need any further attention.
Ianto realised that he was just putting off dealing with his worst injury. The burn on his back had turned into a big angry red welt the size of his spread hand. The skin was cracked and blistered and hurt whenever he moved. He could feel the heat radiating off it. Ianto chided himself for being a baby. Lisa’s injuries were far worse and she hadn’t complained. He took a deep breath and opened another antiseptic wipe before carefully cleaning the area. He could reach it easily with his uninjured left hand, but to see what he was doing meant twisting to look over his shoulder in the mirror, which annoyingly aggravated the tight skin. He gritted his teeth and continued. When he was happy that the wound was clean he applied the soothing gel, relief flooding him as the heat of the burn was instantly taken away. He knew the total relief would only last a few minutes and he would have to reapply the gel in a few hours but for now it was bliss. Time to strap on the dressing, check on Lisa and try and get a few hours rest.
