Chapter 14 “Lisa!” Ianto shouted as he shoved open the double doors and burst through them, stopping in his tracks, his hands limp by his sides and his eyes and mouth wide open unable to take in what he was seeing.
His feet moved him as the conscious part of his mind whited out. He was compelled forward as if in a dream, a nightmare that he knew he couldn’t wake up from.
He fell to his knees in the pool of blood, not even registering the warm and sticky liquid soaking into his trousers. There was so much blood. She had lost so much.
His hands flittered over the body before him not sure where to rest, subconsciously looking for the wound to staunch the flow, not yet ready to comprehend that it was no longer flowing, that he was too late.
Blood pooled around her head and torso and ran into the stream of water that flowed along the drainage channel through this level of the Hub.
His hands moved over her body as cries spilled from his throat, uncontrollable grief pouring from his shattered heart and broken body. He had worked so hard for so long to keep her safe, to keep her hidden to try and find someone who could help her and save her. And this evening when she had taken her first breath unaided and walked on her own with the help of Dr Tanazaki he finally thought they had made it. Things were going right, she was going to get better. They would find a way to fix her. For a few short minutes he had allowed himself to dream of the day she would shed her metal prison and he could take her home and ask her to marry him. They had a life, a future together.
Then it all went to hell in the most spectacular way:
The power drained and he ran down to see what was happening and wound up with his hands covered in blood for the first time that day. He had the blood of the innocent scientist on his hands both figuratively and literally. The was blood everywhere. Being part of Torchwood he was used to dealing with bodies and covering up deaths but that was different.
Lisa had killed him, but she didn’t deserve to die. Not like this. Sobs wracked Ianto’s body as he lifted her head, part of the metal skeleton breaking off. His hands came away bloodied as her eyes stared up at him unseeing, accusing.
“Ianto?”
Ianto startled, grabbing for his gun and standing up
“Ianto, it’s me. Lisa.” Ianto stepped closer to the newcomer
“I’m human again.” Ianto’s gun wavered as he pointed it at the pizza delivery girl. “You fought so hard for me I had to hold on for you. So I took this body and transplanted the brain.” Ianto glanced at Lisa’s bloody body on the floor.
“You’re not Lisa.” He accused, the gun wavering as he dared to hope.
“You always said you didn’t love me for what I looked like.”
Ianto sobbed as she reminisced, could it really be her?
“Hold me Ianto. I need you to hold me.” He needed to hold her. How he needed to hold his Lisa.
“We can be upgraded together.”
The bullets tore through her heart as her words tore through his.
