Hey there!

Uhm, that's weird, because usually it should be working fine! Maybe the picture you're uploading is too big for LJ? Because then it has to compromise the picture. Try to save the icons as jpg or better png. PNG is the smallest image file, if I'm not mistaken. LJ should take that. Just make sure you're icon isn't bigger than 100x100 pixels and smaller than 40KB.
