I don't understand why you're so strict with these - locking them so you can't so who voted what, closing the poll afterward. It's supposed to be fun, not an election in Dade County, FL.

I close the poll so I can declare winners, without having confounding data sneak in afterwards so that my declared winner is invalid.

I lock the results-viewing in case someone would prefer anonymity. That's probably going a bit crazy though.

I was projecting my own anxiety, from a situation that's actually quite different. I didn't vote in your Michael Jackson poll (for the best song from the Thriller album) 'cause I was afraid of being judged for my musical tastes. But musical tastes are something that people commonly judge each other for. "How can you listen to that shit?" says the music snob. Taste in the aesthetics of interacting galaxies, however, is not. So I might as well leave the Finals poll open.
