BACKGROUND:

The series introduces Homura Akemi as a mysterious transfer student. It's hinted that she may not be what she appears, but it's only very late into the story that the main character discovers who-- and what-- she truly is. Homura is a transfer student not just from another school, but an entirely different universe. Many of them, in fact. She has been living the same one-month loop in her life countless times, each one ending more horribly than the last, the events that led to the end of the world (and her best friend) getting progressively worse despite all of her meddling. It's unclear just how long she has been rewinding time, but considering her behavior and skill with the situation, it may have been years.

In the first timeline, she was hospitalized for around six months because of an illness in her heart. She filled out the transfer forms for Mitakihara Junior High herself and was admitted. Because of her physical weakness and emotional fragility, she was bullied and teased by others in the class. One classmate, Madoka Kaname, was always very kind and supportive, and she stood up for Homura. She even used magic to enhance Homura's legs so that she might be able to pass a test in P.E.. When this went wrong and caused her to hate herself more, Madoka stepped in and apologized, but Homura didn't understand what was going on. Though Homura was not aware of it, she would soon be inextricably tangled in the secret world of magical girls and wishes.

Her low self-confidence made her a target for beings who feed off negative emotions, called Witches. One in particular began to whisper suicidal thoughts into her head, and led Homura into her realm to be killed. However, as she was being attacked, Madoka and a senior student named Mami appeared, destroying the Witch's familiars and saving Homura's life. Homura was deeply affected by the strength and magic they showed. All of them became good friends, but they urged Homura not to become a Puella Magi-- a magical girl-- on a whim. A contract with Kyubey was binding. Fighting Witches was a calling, and not something to be taken lightly. Knowing this, Homura stayed out of the conflict.

And that was a mistake. An immensely powerful witch appeared about a month later, the result of a sort of magic festival known as Walpurgis Night. Mami wasn't able to take the witch on by herself and died, and it broke Madoka. However, she had to protect the world the only way she knew how. She told Homura that she was glad they were friends, and then she fought the Witch and died as well. Homura was lost without Madoka; Madoka was her only friend, and this fate was just too cruel. Kyubey, ever the alien opportunist, told Homura that she had the power to change Madoka's fate if she so desired.

So she made her wish. She wanted to redo her meeting with Madoka, and this time she would protect Madoka instead of being protected. Her soul was captured and placed into a soul gem, and she woke up before her meeting with Madoka, and she remembered. Homura approached Madoka openly about being a Puella Magi, so Mami and Madoka trained her to fight. She slowly gained confidence in herself and her own abilities, as well as her ability to stop Madoka's death.

Unfortunately, this was not to be. Madoka still died. So Homura rewound time again, determined to tell her classmates that Kyubey was tricking them. However, this only caused a rift between the girls, and Madoka's friends refused to trust Homura. In one timeline, after seeing Sayaka turn into a Witch-- the revealed fate of all Puella Magi-- Mami shot and killed Kyoko as a mercy killing. She was about to kill Homura, too, but Madoka killed her, leaving only Madoka and Homura to fight Walpurgis Night. Again, this timeline was doomed. Again and again, Homura went back in time. Countless times. And in each one, Madoka's death became worse. Once, Homura was asked to shoot Madoka to prevent her from becoming a Witch.

Madoka's last wish, or one of them, is for Homura to go back in time and stop her from making a contract. Homura remembers this, and goes through the same events once more to protect Madoka from Kyubey. She tracks down the little alien and kills him over and over, and she warns Madoka, but she's still too weak to defeat Walpurgis Night by herself. Homura finally realizes in the current timeline that her efforts are dooming Madoka. She hesitates to rewind time and doubts herself for the first time. Despair begins to taint her Soul Gem, threatening to turn Homura into a Witch, but Madoka appears and staves off the sadness.

She's finally decided to make a contract. Staring on in horror, Homura has no idea what Madoka will wish for, but it seems that history is bound to repeat itself endlessly.

PERSONALITY:

Homura is cold. She dresses modestly and plainly, and she uses full names to distance herself from others. She knows far more than she lets on, and she doesn't allow herself even a moment of weakness. For a fourteen-year-old girl, she seems fairly atypical; she has no apparent hobbies, she doesn't smile, and she has no friends. Homura doesn't speak up unless it's needed, either. Her aloof manner combined with her 'cool' name makes her popular among her classmates, but she doesn't seem interested in them. She also lives alone, surrounded by information about the monsters she fights.

For all her barriers, she is not bereft of compassion; she uses her powers to intervene in the fight between Sayaka and Kyoko so that the former won't get hurt, and she willingly throws herself off a bridge to fetch Sayaka's Soul Gem. No one asked her to do these things, and no one asked her to help. She's very straightforward with her actions, but her mysterious words and harsh advice leave some questions. At heart, she is an incredibly hopeful and determined girl. She has no choice, as Kyubey tells Madoka: if Homura despairs, she will fall and turn into a Witch. So she keeps going, on and on and on, growing colder and more hurt each time.

Occasionally cracks in her armor appear, usually around Madoka. She hesitates to be harsh to Madoka, and insists that the other girl call her by her first name, much like Madoka insisted on doing in the original timeline. Still, Homura doesn't break down and admit the truth of her existence until her efforts appear to be fruitless. Only then does she allow herself to hold Madoka close, or even cry, and she apologizes profusely for confusing her. In a way, Madoka is Homura's weakness.

Madoka is also her greatest strength. Long before the cool, confident Homura appeared, she was a glasses-girl who was spectacularly terrible at school and making friends. She believed that it was better if she simply stopped existing... But Madoka taught Homura that even a weak girl with no talents could make a difference in the world, could protect people and belong to something. Madoka accepted her and believed in her and stood up for her. Homura's idolization of Madoka goes beyond simple friendship. To Homura, Madoka is everything. She gives up her soul for a chance to save her "only friend". By becoming a Puella Magi, Homura discovered the same confidence that Madoka found in her calling... and she discovered that wishes have a terrible price.

Homura cares for Mami, Sayaka, and Kyoko as well. She's shared months and months of experiences with them due to her time loops, and she's seen their greatest moments and their worst. But in order to save Madoka, she has to keep herself from getting too close. She has to interfere. Homura isn't afraid to play the antagonist if it means averting a horrible fate, and she learned this the hard way when the others refused to trust her knowledge of the future.

Homura's story is wrapped in tragedy. She made a deal with the devil in order to save a life, and she is eternally caught in the same eventful span of time. As she seeks to control it and change it, the strings become more and more convoluted. The shy, idealistic girl that Madoka first met isn't gone, merely buried; she has just begun to realize that she may never get what she wants, and that breaks her.

POWER:

The vehicle of Homura's powers is the Soul Gem that resides on her body constantly. When she's transformed, it looks like a purple diamond-shaped jewel set into the back of her left hand. Its true form is a purple glass egg set in gold, but for convenience outside of battle, she wears it as a runed ring around her left middle finger. A Soul Gem is literally that: it houses the girl's soul, so that if her body is hurt, she can heal herself or even get a new body. In other words, Homura as we know her is just a shell that can be regenerated, at least theoretically (it's never actually shown in canon). Her Soul Gem also gives her a fantastic Magical Girl outfit and the hourglass-themed shield that supports her other powers. Using her magic drains her and causes the Soul Gem to darken; if it were to darken completely, Homura would go insane and become a monster. This can be prevented with the Power of HopeTM, or the more standard way of dispatching evil, either by killing criminals or bringing them to justice in the city.

Homura's signature is the ability to stop time, and eventually rewind it back a month in order to create a new timeline. Her powers will be dampened to the point where she can only use her timestopping ability (with a permission post). It looks like teleportation, but in fact she's pausing her environment. Whatever she touches is pulled into the timefreeze with her, but if she lets go, they will be frozen like her surroundings. Generally she only freezes time for a few minutes of perceptive time, long enough to move people, shoot targets accurately, or plant a series of bombs and make them go off at once.

Her third power is that of hammerspace. Tangentially connected to the Soul Gem, she's able to hide entire armories of modern weapons inside her time buckler, assuming she can lift the weapons in question.

Akemi-san.

Her eyes snapped open without hesitation. She sat up straight, arm extended to transform and protect herself if needed. The walls around her were white, but they lacked the sunny sterility of the hospital. Right. She was still locked in this timeline. She couldn't turn it back, not just yet. She wasn't finished here.

How long had she slept? If the strongest Witch materialized just once, it would destroy the city. Homura had seen it so many times. It was one more thing she had to prevent, but above all, Madoka couldn't...

She clenched her sheets so hard that her knuckles turned white, and then she tossed them away and stood up. She'd slept in her civilian clothes just in case. Despite being on the first floor of the building, she could hear the rain smashing futilely against the outside walls, backed by a screaming wind.

Homura glanced over the information she'd assembled regarding Walpurgis Night one more time. All of her preparations were in place. It would end soon, and then-- if she failed-- it would begin again. What would happen next time? If the reason for Madoka's power was Homura's intervention, just how terrible would her fate be if she failed? Homura wanted to save her so desperately, but she acknowledged that she had no choice but to continue this futility. She could not betray her wish, lest it betray her.

A splash of bright purple on the edge of the counter caught her eye, her ribbons. She'd worn them what felt like many lifetimes ago, and perhaps it had been. Homura drifted over to the mirror. She saw a pale, poker-faced girl, perhaps a little sickly. With the slow recitation that came from a fond memory, she parted her hair in the middle and used her hands to form two pigtails on either side of her head.

She remembered. It hurt, but she remembered: Madoka wanted to see Homura wearing thin red ribbons instead of her usual violet ones. Homura-chan, they look so cool on you! Her bottom lip trembled. Homura let her hair fall back to her waist and turned away from the vanity sharply.

The eternal maze awaited her.
