The first typewriter I ever used looked like that -- but it was the typewriter in my father's office. I think we still have something one or two models on in the basement somewhere.

My sister still has it in her house. My kids type on it whenever we visit, and they can't believe that people typed on that kind of monster regularly. I tell them to get off the objet d'art.

(To be fair, I learned on an electric. I'd had it with that typewriter by the time I hit high school. {g})

Oh, god, I had one of those. I found it on top of a garbage can one night in New York, cleaned it up, found a place that still sold the right ribbons and wrote my first story on it with a bottle of Jim Beam pretending to be Lillian Hellman (yes, I was VERY young. Yes, I still have the story. No, I was not Lillian Hellman, nor ever shall be :) It broke my heart to leave it behind when I moved away, but at that weight I'd have had to buy it its own seat on the plane to London.

Oh, seriously. The Boy tried to move the typewriter, and he wasn't prepared for the weight. He's used to lifting laptops. {g}

That was my favorite part of "Julia," just the scenes of her writing. Or was that some other movie where Jane Fonda played a writer? Either way, I liked the cool typewriter.

Yes! Yes! That's EXACTLY how I pictured Hellman, and exactly why. God, I loved that story. Now I'm dying to see the movie again. Or read Pentimento -- I still have the same well-thumbed copy.
