today i went to church. my mother's assistant teacher asked me to come to present a 'mission moment' about being a peace corps volunteer. i had to stay through the whole service, and stay after to talk during 'coffee hour'... answering questions for 85 yr old ladies and their husbands... all trying to bring me into teh folds of the church, telling ( Read more... )

yeah... Have you thought about if you'll attend religious services once you're at your site in the Peace Corps? Whitney and I are weighing it right now. We're both atheists too, but it seems like it might be a valuable way to better assimilate into our community and build their trust... IF there aren't too many awkward moments like the one you mention here. We'll see when we get there I guess...

see, i'm incredibly tempted, because it actually IS a fantastic way to assimilate and join a community... but i've discovered it's almost impossible to avoid those situations... and while i can be polite during 2 hours of church each sunday... i'm not sure i can do it ever sunday for two years... PLUS, i really do get depressed at church, 'cause i think it would be kinda of amazing believe, to have that strenght of faith.... i just dont. and that only bothers me when i'm in church. and i'm not sure that i want to put myself in that kind of position while i'm also away from home for two years... i think i'm going to wait and see what the peace corps advises, and see how i feel about kenyan culture/relg/the pratice of faith before i decide.

what church did your mom bring you to? i know everyone goes to the congregational church in the valley, and i don't think I've ever seen your family at the catholic church. the creepy methodist church?

i hate church. but heather has to have a big ole church wedding and of course she wants it in the catholic church in lake placid. every week i have to give those creepy fucks two dollars and pretend i care.

i went to the congregational church... milton dudley is on sabatical (sp?) but naj weijkoff (sp again?) did the service. my mom dosnt go to church, but she works with ethel webb, who was the one who asked me to speak. i like church, in general... the community, the time to reflect... everything except the whole 'god' thing.
