Three suggestions:
A: American society is no better today than it was during the oppressive fifties.
B: American society is way better than it ever has been, so get off your whiny ass and stop complaining about how American society is no better today than it was during the oppressive fifties.
C: American society was not oppressive during the fifties. Quit using this as your prototypical example of what's wrong with America.
