pick out 6 of the balls put 3 on either side of the scale
if the weights are equal, then the heavy ball is is the pile of unused balls (if this is the case, take two of the unused balls, put one on each side of the scale -- if they are equal the last ball is the heavier one)
if the weights are unequal, take the three from the side that weighed the most. pick out two balls from these three, compare their weights on the scale. the scale will tip towards the heavier one. if they're equal, then the one that was not used is the heavier one.
