One of the challenges I will be facing when I move in with Ruby will be my lack of bed. There are plans to try and get a water bed for me. But I also want a rug in my room. Putting a rug in after setting up the water bed would be troublesome. And at the moment it isn’t 100% that I will be able to get a free water bed frame

After reading the review posted on the frame, you might keep looking. But it's a pretty good idea if you can stand to sleep in a hammock. Also relatively cheap are futons.

Too bad you don't live in a college town... or do you?

It's amazing what you can find near college apartments. People will throw away anything. I had a roommate find a practically new queen sized box spring and mattress... and I got a desk. Best time to find those, however, is in May... so time-wise, that's probably not the best.

You might also check out K-Mart or Target. You ought to be able to get a futon for about $100. Too bad you weren't out looking this past LaborDay weekend. A lot of places had furniture on sale... then again, stores are trying to get rid of back-to-school items so they can start putting out seasonal things... so you still may be able to get a good deal-- especially if you live in a college town... just look at retail stores near the college.
