So... there was a discussion tonight with the woman who is related to me by marriage. I won't say which side of the debate that I am on, so as not to tamper with the survey pool

Gotta say that they're all chips, certainly, but since Doritos were explicitly sold as "corn chips," I think the potato label has to be rejected. No potato, no potato chip.
So the question for anyone interested is... does it need be crafted from potato to be a potato chip?
HELL YES.
That is the most preposterous idea ever to call something not made out of potato a "potato" chip. I also think the regions of the country that call all sodas "coke" are partaking of the *other* kind of coke, ifyouwhatimeanandithinkyoudo. You can call them, soda, pop, soda pop, or soft drink, I don't care. But unless it's at least manufactured from the Coca Cola company and has something in it derived even nominally from the kola nut (or whatever the source is for a cola), then IT IS NOT COKE.
Ahem. No, I'm not strongly opinionated on this matter, why do you ask? ;)
(P.S. Thank goodness we can edit replies because otherwise I could never fix my stoopid typos.)
Of potato origin = potato chip. Of corn origin = corn chip. Of tortilla origin = tortilla chip. (Not all tortilla chips can be called corn chips, for there are both corn tortillas and flour tortillas.)

Made from corn - tortilla chip.
I would use "chip" as the general term for most of those products, but not "potato chip".

This feels like an SAT logic problem.

Yes. Otherwise, it is just a "chip." Neither Doritos nor Cheetos are potato chips although they live on the chip aisle.
