When I was in grad school, there was a pro-life rally on campus led by that guy--what's-his-name, Terry Something?--who initiated the organization of the movement. (It was 20 years ago, so forgive me for forgetting his name.) I went because I wanted to see how the opposition's group mind worked and ended up having a long one-on-one talk with the guy afterward.
The thing I had to admit was that the room was full of intelligent people who had come to this decision thoughtfully and believed in it passionately. I didn't agree with them and they scared the shit out of me, but I couldn't discount them.
Sometimes all you can ask is that we don't discount each other, even when we think the other one is wrong.

BTW, people are just as reluctant to confront other on there bs here on the East Coast too. It's not a midwestern thing, not really.
Too bad we never met up when I was home last week. We need to make sure to see one another when I'm home for winter break.
