Fun with Google Maps

Google Maps is BRILLIANT! If you want to take a different route than the one they give you, they now allow you to customize it by dragging and dropping the blue line wherever you want. I was looking up directions to tomorrow's Detroit Marathon Expo at Cobo, and wanted to avoid taking I-94 because of all the construction. I'd been told that ( Read more... )

That will likely work from A^2. From my house, I-94 is much more efficient. I would take I-94 to I-96 (Continuing east), merge across 3 lanes to be in the second leftmost lane, and exit onto M-10, The Lodge. It goes directly to Cobo.

From Cobo, I would avoid I-96 westbound like a road reduced to one lane, which it is. Take the Lodge up to I-94, and exit (from the left hand side). Follow it across, or exit onto I-96, north of the construction. YYMV, and please recognize I don't drive into Detroit on the weekends.

Freeway Slalom, a Detroit Original.

I was going to suggest the Lodge too, but I don't know if they will be closing it for foot traffic for the race....

Freeway slalom is also a favorite sport here in the Bay area, where 101 is routinely clogged so badly that driving 14 miles can take you an hour. If the route weren't so treacherous and I didn't arrive stinky and sweaty, I would ride to work. There are some pretty tough climbs on my route and it would take some dedication to ride them every day.

Thanks! I'll definitely keep that in mind on my way back today. I'll try out the 96 eastbound route today to go to the expo since I'm leaving from my place, but I'm sure we'll take I-94 tomorrow morning.

I like the street view feature too -- after mapping out my route, I've used the street view to check for landmarks and parking nearby to help me find my destination. I one used it to find a gym where I was taking a seminar and the street view let me take a peek at the storefronts of the businesses nearby. It's a pretty neat feature, although it is not without its detractors who are worried about privacy. Is the street view available in Ann Arbor and Detroit yet? One of Google's founders -- I think it was Sergey Brin -- attended UM for grad school so I wonder if his ties to the area made Ann Arbor a beta testing area for the street view feature.

Sorry I forgot to add:

Good Luck with the race!

And there's construction on 94 again???? When I moved away from Michigan four years ago 94 was still a mess.

Construction on all our freeways is perpetually unending.

Thanks, I'm getting really excited about it!:-) And yes, there is still construction on 94. It was going on 9 years ago when I did my internship at Henry Ford's Center for Athletic Medicine in the New Center area, and apparently they haven't finished yet. I personally believe that they will never be done, because by the time they finish fixing all the wear and tear Engler allowed to accumulate during his reign administration, it will be time to start all over again.
