I work with 2 women who both have children between the ages of 8 and 12. All they do is bitch and moan about the amount of homework their kids have, how hard it is, how are their precious spawn supposed to finish all this work, blah, blah, blah ( Read more... )

Not that I'm defending these women at all, but kids are getting a lot more homework these days than I remember having at the same age... And we were not spoon-fed... I used to come home with maybe 30 minutes to an hour of homework and then I would go out and play until it got dark... Nowadays kids are getting 3 or more hours worth of homework (this is just elementary school I'm talking about) and by the time they finish, they barely have time to eat and bathe before it's time for bed. (No wonder there are so many obese kids... Not to mention that education funding has been cut so a lot of schools do away with phys ed and other athletic programs to fund academics...) And... The "No child left behind" system doesn't help anything either...

With these two it is more a problem of not making their children personally responsible for getting the work done. Cathy spends more time argueing with her kids about getting their homework done then she ends up helping them to the point of doing most of it for them because she doesn't want them to fail and make her look like a bad parent.

I wonder how much childhood obesity is due to lack of PE as much as a lack of responsible parenting. How many of these kids come home from school to high fat, high sugar stacks then plop down in front of the TV for hours of mindless crap or video games?

I would like to ask the various boards of education who in the hell had the bright idea to let 2nd graders decide what they wanted for lunch? We didn't get a choice (other than school lunch or sack lunch) until junior high and even then the choice was hot line or cold line.

I'm sure the obesity thing is a combination of all of it... People are making irresponsible food choices and then are not being active enough... Then they want to go and sue McDonald's because they got fat... it sickens me...

Yeah... our food choices were limited as well... Until High School... then I went to an open campus school so we went to Wendy's everyday... I was always poor, so my lunch was always either the 99 cent side salad or baked potato... For the longest time everyone always thought I was a vegetarian or on a diet...
