So, as you probably realize, I learned most of my English from reading young adult books that my mom would bring me back from her business trips to the U.S., and I have this very lazy tendency to never look up words I don't know.
In this way, I came to believe that awry was pronounced AW-ree, and misled was pronounced MIZE-ld. I thought they were terrifically quirky adjectives, meaning not-quite-right and confused, respectively.
Then, years later when I learned them the right way from hearing people say them, I had forgotten about AW-ree and MIZE-ld, and somewhere in the back of my mind believed that they were different words that still existed. I remember this because when I'm tired and I read something that has the word 'awry' in it, I still hear it pronounced AW-ree in my mind's ear.
