I'm taking an 'artifact analysis' class this semester.  So far the course has been really great.  Today we took a test, where we each got an antique quilt block, multiple swatches of fabric and tiny pieces of thread.  The instructor also brought out 2 antique quilts for us to answer questions about.   We had to identify the dyeing and printing ( Read more... )

My mother is a quilter- she makes her's with reproduction fabrics from the 30's. She mentioned that she would like a book on dating quilts. Could you recommend one? Granted she wouldn't be doing the sort of analysis that you do, but she's interested in knowing more about fabric types, and learning about the quilts she enherited from her grandmother.

Your class sounds fascinating.

Pretty much any book by Barbara Brackman is great for quilt dating and history. The best book by her, is called "Clues in the Calico" and it is out of print and really hard to find. The lowest I've seen that book go for is $160. It is an awesome book though. It's something to keep a look out for when you visit small town used book stores!
