I was walking Mocha down on Lone Ranch Beach and saw an injured beached seal. Poor thing was suffering and didn't look like he was long for the world. I tried calling someone who would go and help the poor thing and come to find out that it's against Oregon law to help the seal. They can't go try and rescue it, they can't put it out of its misery; ( Read more... )

That really sucks. The law is really stupid sometime. I agree, just leaving it there to die is inhumane.

Ugh, I don't understand the ludicrous laws out there. A man in my town found a seal pup stranded on the beach and he tried to help it. For that, he was sentenced to TEN YEARS IN PRISON**! I'm not even fucking kidding. This country is so ass-backwards. TORMENTING an animal doesn't even earn that much prison time. What is it, like, three years max if it's bad enough? What the hell.

**this could be slightly wrong, but it was still crazy long. I remember being shocked and disgusted. The guy hadn't even known it was illegal.

Seals are protected by federal law, that's probably why he got a much larger sentence than some one say, just abusing a dog. However, California doesn't make it illegal for certain organizations to help stranded seals. Oregon does, meaning no state working reprehensive can help a seal--no one can help the seal. Hey up until a few years ago, it was in the Oregon constitution that no one of Asian decent could own property. They obviously didn't enforce it, but it shows you how stupid and wrong many laws this country endorses really are.

Being protected by federal law doesn't make such a weird sentence logical. He helped it, didn't even know it was illegal, and ended up in prison.

But yeah, that sounds pretty stupid, too. Oregon must be quite backwards. I've never lived there, just visited. Now if I had any thoughts on moving there, they're gone. XD

They're getting better, slowly mind you, but better. Maybe is twenty years someone will come to their senses and change the law. Who knows...
